Phone fax sounds (XP)

When my XP computer is plugged into the phone jack and the telephone rings, and I answer it, there are very loud fax sounds on the telephone until I dive under the computer desk and unplug the phone jack to the computer.

I have found this problem described on a couple of other "lists", but no replies giving a solution!

It does not seem to be a problem with Phone Tools answering machine, as it is set to be "off". Is it my phone line? (1970 house with 6 line wiring with only one set hooked up to all the phone jacks in the house.) The XP computer did not do this until this fall, and this was about the time a new phone box was put on the outside of our house and all the phone jacks were rewired to use the one "best" line wiring available. Does the XP need 4 phone wires? The Win95 computer that was networked with the XP did not seem to have the problem. Now have a new DellXP networked with the other DellXP and it seems that both have the problem.

Is there some other setting on the computer that I need to change?

    -Barb.

Do you have a FAX program running on the XP machine ?? If so and you have it setup to monitor incoming calls then it could be answering the phone along with you. If you don't use a FAX program then check your modem settings as Lief suggests.

In case this helps, you might also look at turning off the computer sound for the modem - unless you feel you need it. Select the modem in the Control panel applet. Choose Properties|Advanced and type m0 into the Extra Initialization Commands box.

I am using a Dell XPDimension Desktop, XP, Conexant HCF V90 RTAD Speakerphone PCI Modem, BVRP Phone tools is set to answering machine "off", and the fax is set to transmission and reception disabled. Would uninstalling the BVRP software make any difference? No other fax software is installed (that I can find anyway?). What modem setting should I check?

The fax sound is on my telephone when I answer a telephone call and the computer modem is plugged into a telephone jack, but not on-line (I only have one phone line). Would turning off the computer sound for the modem eliminate the fax sound on the telephone? Would I still be able to hear my telephone caller? - Barb.

Sounds like there is a "Auto Answer" going on, you need to check all of your modem settings and any fax or phone answering software.

Also do you have one of those "All in one" type of printers that include the faxing and/or answering machine?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

You say you hear the FAX sounds until you dive under the desk and unplug the jack to the computer. Is there someone on the phone after you do this or is the line dead. From time to time I hear fax sounds coming through my speakers. This is a FAX machine trying to connect to my number in error most of the time (a wrong number).

I always keep the modem sound level at a low volume so I can hear if there are any phoneline issues when I am having trouble connecting. Two nights ago I was having problems connecting via the dial-up number I always use and by listening to the connection I could tell the phone company was having line trouble. I was connecting to an answering machine and the message was in spanish. Definitely not my ISP !!

I'm not aquainted with the software, but presumably there is no other fax-only auto-answer option?

The only other thing I can think of is to to activate TaskManager, click on Processes, sort on CPU (usage) and see if anything starts up or becomes more active when a call comes in.

Is the Windows XP FAX Service running?

Start > Run > Services.msc

Double click on FAX to open its properties

Click the stop button

Change the startup type from Automatic to Disabled[/list]StuartR

    Re: Phone fax sounds (XP)

We have 3 XP computers, and they all have the same problem. One of them had the Microsoft Fax Console installed. I changed it from automatic to disabled. That did not solve the problem. After the second ring on an incoming telephone call there are "carrier sounds" until I dive under the computer desk and pull out the phone jack to the modem. - Barb.

    Re: Phone fax sounds (XP)

I don't find any other fax-only auto-answer options. I checked the CPU usage on processes in the Task Manager. Svchost.exe seems more active during an incoming phone call after the modem activates, but..... I need help in understanding what that means and where to go from there. I looked at Microsoft.com to find out about svchost.exe, but when I typed in Tasklist /SVC, and then pressed ENTER, I got: "Tasklist" is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I don't really understand what this means? - Barb.

Yes, usually there is someone on the phone after I unplug the jack to the computer (if I get there fast enough, other wise it disconnects them, and then they have to call back - my friends are becoming accustomed to this problem!.) It is not a FAX machine trying to connect to my number in error (although that does happen from time to time too). - Barb.

Yes, there does seem to be some sort of "auto answer" going on, but so far I can't find it! What modem settings should I check???

This is a problem on all three of our XP computers. One (laptop) does not have any phone tools, and the fax console is not installed. One does not have any phone tools, and the fax console has been disabled. One has the phone tools disabled and the fax console has not been installed.

The printer attached is an Epson Color 600. It is not one of the "all in one" types and does not fax or act as an answering machine.
