Copy CD tracks to HDD and play

I have a stand-alone PC running Win98SE which has no Internet access.

Is it possible to copy the tracks off a music CD to the harddisk and play them from there. I have noticed that the visible files seem to be some type of shortcut to the actual data (tracks) but beyond that I am at a loss.

I know I can convert them to MP3, although I haven't tried this as yet, but for reasons of simplicity I would like to do the copy thing.

The problem with copying them without converting to mp3's is the size. Each song is apporx 30-50 megabytes where as the same mp3 is 3-5 megs.

As far as copying it, what you see is a shortcut, kinda. I know you can copy the CD to the HD with Musicmatch or similar software, but I think it converts it anyway.

I have an old, musty watched thread that you may want to look at. A lot of posts but, a very lively discussion and healthy digest of capturing digital music.

Thanks to all for the feed-back.

Ok, I'll create the MP3s as this does sound the easiest. It was just that I'm without my laptop and burner but I do have access to another PC with burner.

Converting the CD tracks to MP3 is a relatively simple process and the space saved on your HD is well worth the effort and time. The attached file is a short course in how to that I Googled up here.
