    Windows Script Host Error Message

    <img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> Loungers

I am connecting to the Internet from my sister's office PC. Its running Windows 2000 Pro, and each time I boot I get the following:

    Windows Script Host
    Script: C:WINNTSystem32kernel32.dll
    Line:1
    Char:3
    Error: Invalid Character
    Code: 800A0408
    Source: Microsoft VBScript compilation error.

OK is the kernel32.dll bad, that I need to reinstall Windows 2000 Pro, or can I simply copy the DLL from another PC that seems to work?

What the heck is the VBScript doing? is the error in a VBScript program? Is so, i think I can fix it if I can see the code.

OK any help will be appriciated.

There probably is a problematic logon script or something like that.
    - Look in the startup folder(s) for .vbs files. If you can find them, move them out of the startup folder.
    - Look for references to .vbs files in the following locations in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRun
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionRun
If you find such entries, delete them (you can export them to a .reg file first if you like)

    Hans

There are no *.vbs programs nor anything in the StartUp folder?

I changed the settings to see all files, and Startup is empty...

    Thanks

    Try a system file check:
    - Have your Windows CD-ROM on hand.
    - Select Start | Run...
    - Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
If your kernel32.dll is corrupt, it will be replaced.

    Hans

I will be in Amsterdam, at the airport, January 16th, from 6:10AM to 11:30 AM. What would you suggest doing? Could I take a ride downtown or is the airport too far away?

OK so ran System File Checker and it just ran and did not do a thing. Is there a "repair" switch, or does the ScanNow switch repair as well?

I will check the registry, but I was too fast to mention that there were no VBScript (vbs) files, I found some with a deeper search after I discovered that the Search sub folders was not checked.

One file in particular I am targeting is in the WINNTSystem32 path. Its called pubprn.vbs, but I think this is a printing utility for Windows 2000.

The others are called std[1].vbs and they are all in the Temporary Internet filesContent.IE5 folder path.

I will run spyware and see if they get flagged, and also the registry as you suggested.

But for now, any other things to do?

    TIA

    Wassim,

There is a railway station in Schiphol Amsterdam Airport. There are frequent trains to Amsterdam Central Station (6 per hour), and they take only 15 to 20 minutes to get there. Of course, not much will be open early in the morning. Shops and museums open at 9 AM or 10 AM. The historic center of Amsterdam is very compact, walking is the best way to see it, or you could take a canal cruise.

I will try and take a tour of the city.

I will try the registry entries tomorrow, and see where I get from there.
