    Upgrade question... (Win XP)

I am going to update my PC (Compaq Presario with a AMD K6-2 (sic) chip, maxxed out RAM that has WIN98 SE and Office 2000 on it. I need to upgrade my system due to my wife enrolling in Grad school and the need to be up to date with the school. I want to get Office XP Professional so I can have powerpoint and Access. I use my PC at home for home stuff, to access the computer system at work via a VPN set-up, and do work projects. Is the home version of WIN XP all I need, or are there any reasons for a home user to get the professional version of Win XP?

Thanks for any and all input...

The general feeling here is that Pro is a more sensible choice in virtually any scenario. To get a better feel of the individual views, try looking at the threads starting with <post#=192777>post 192777</post#>, <post#=314913>post 314913</post#> and <post#=270049>post 270049</post#>. HTH

Thanks for the links...looks like I want Pro...your links may have prevented me from making a big error. I work at a VA (i.e. US gov't) hospital, and the VPN link gives many problems. I may need the extra networking assurance that Pro gives.

    Again.... <img src=/S/thankyou.gif border=0 alt=thankyou width=40 height=15>

Have your wife check at school to see if she can purchase the academic version of Office. It is generally much cheaper.

Just wanted to say " Hi, Neighbor. " I know you've been here for awhile, but welcome to The Lounge and our best wishes to the missus in grad school! Like Unkamunka, I think someone in your situation would be well served to use XP Pro, so good luck to ya, and let us hear from ya!

    Roger--

You definitely will have more control/security with Pro for your network and your wife's school will probably have a computer/gadget store with significant software and hardware discounts. These links might help:
