Slow file saves in Word 97 (Office 97/SR1a & SR-2)

Just upgraded a network to have SBS2003 server. The W2KProf workstations on the LAN (all moved from old domain to new) running Office 97 are saving documents at glacial speed.

I have checked the obvious things like Fast Save & Journalling, but have drawn a blank.

    Anybody have any other suggestions?

    Thanks.

Yes. The machines are running Sophos AV, a far superior product

I did a search here before posting my question. Nothing that I found really seemed to fit the bill.....

Some mentions of this problem, but as far as I can see no clear solutions in the newsgroups either. Sorry...

Did the locations of any server-based document templates change? If so, does it help to change the document templates to the new path?

Thanks. Checked that. All the documents seem to be based on Normal.dot and I have confirmed that this is now in the right place (it wasn't before), but it doesn't seem to have made any difference

My only other thoughts related to network changes involve: obsolete drive mappings (how this could affect Word's save dialog, I'm not sure) and... did you switch from NT SAM to Active Directory as part of this process? There might be some networking settings that need to be tweaked. Again, though, not real logical that this would be seen only in Word.

Re: Slow file saves in Word 97 (Office 97/SR1a & SR-2)

The systems moved from an NT4 domain to a completely new W2K3 domain (on SBS2003). The slow saves do seem to be most obvious in Office apps. Excel doesn't fly either, but it's not as slow as Word.

I think I'm either going to have to put a scope on the line or rebuild the machines.

Do you use any antivirus "plug-ins" that work directly inside of Word? If so, try turning them off briefly to see if that helps. The regular, full-time/real-time antivirus scanner really should be enough...

Nope. Client runs Sophos AV which is about as non-intrusive, but effective as you can get. Scans are only done on read.

Time to break out the hub and a copy of Ethereal I think

A bit more info from a network scan.....

Further checking gives me these frames:

(posted as attachment because of line length)

192.168.1.2 is the server 1.15 is the client.

Looks as if the server is taking an age to respond to the request to create the file.....

    Anybody any ideas????

May I assume it does not take 30 seconds to create/save a file/folder if you're working from the console on the server? Unless the NIC card is flaky, which is easy enough to check, you probably need to figure out what the server actually is doing during its 30 second "pause."
