Compile on Demand: Yes or No? (A2002 (SP-2))

Is there anything approaching a general consensus as to whether it's a good idea to check the "Compile on Demand" and "Background Compile" options (under VBE Tools-->Options-->General)?

<img src=/S/read.gif border=0 alt=read width=19 height=33> The default setting is True (checked) for both. The Developer's Handbook (2002 version) seems to lean against, but only mildly, and I'm not sure I fully understand their discussion of the issue.

It's sort of a moot point. If you are handing a customer an Access database, you are either going to give it to them as an .mde, or an .mdb. If it's an .mde, then the option in question is N/A, since .mde's are already compiled. If it's an .mdb, then I would suggest compile on demand (with background compile). Larger databases may take advantage of having Access compile everything at startup, but it also slows down the startup of larger databases. So it is both a plus and a minus. When in development, you DEFINITELY don't want to have it compile at each start.

So the answer is, yes, no, maybe, and alright....sure.

I know, but it is a relatively odd setting to have in place, right? I mean I can't really come up with a true advantage of when you would want to have the code compiled at the boot. Because if you are in a situation where the startup time is unimportant, why would the fractional speed difference during normal operation be so critical? We aren't talking about seconds worth of a delay, we are talking about millisecond here....especially on modern computers (that will run Access 2000 and up....). And if speed was that critical, then you would create an .mde, so everything is compiled already!
