Looking to make a Lounge icon

I would like to make a Lounge icon to use on my Quick Launch taskbar and thought that the Lounge mascot would make a likely candidate. Unfortunately, I can't seem to log in at a time when he is basking about. Can anyone suggest a good time when Lex might be lurking about so I can grab a snapshot? I am also assuming that I would not be breaking any copyright rules by taking such action!!!

Cheers,
Regards,
Bob

Easy to do - and there may be an easier way than this...!

Get a copy of FavOrg (see this thread) and use it to get the Lounge icon. It should appear in the address bar as per the attachment below.

Right-click on Desktop > New > Shortcut.
Enter the URL for the Lounge, and OK out.
Right-click on the shortcut and select Change Icon, browse to the FavOrg data folder and select Lex.
Drag the Desktop shortcut onto your QuickLaunch bar and Hey Presto!

Probably easier doing it Leif's way, but there is a copy of lex ( ) in the "Smiles" to copy if that would be of any help in creating icons. Since it is for personal use, it doesn't cause any problems concerning copywrite rules, does it? Irfanview, a graphic application that is a favorite that is mentioned quite a bit in the lounge, has the capability of converting images to icons.

The program Leif suggested is a very good program and will help you do a number of things. You can also use a search engine for icon harvesting programs--we've had a number of threads in Software Finds--many are free if you enjoy working with icons.

What I do is to to get Lex and many other favicons is just to drag the little "e" from the top of the explorer name bar (not sure about other browsers I'll have to try) and you've got Lex on your desktop--at least I did from this page and I suspect most others. Now you have to give him a house and save him--I don't know about feed him. Two steps: 1) Change the name of the dragged Lex to anything 2) Tuck it into a folder. I have one for Icons I call Favicons. You can then drag him down to your quick launch or anywhere else.

I think you used to be able to go www.wopr.com/favicon and also see this but recent changes may have altered that ability. Leif, Mike, Claude and others would know if this is so.

Re: Looking to make a Lounge icon

One of the problems I was having with your suggested solution was that Lex was not appearing to the left of the URL... I only had the standard "E" symbol. However, I did acquire FavOrg and gave it a whirl... still no Lex. So, I created another favorite pointing to the Lounge and re-ran FavOrg. This time the crafty beast appeared and I was able to follow through and create the Quick Launch item in the taskbar (see below).

I will continue to seek out the crafty one in his different poses to develop other icons. I have SnagIt (to capture the pose) and Microangelo (to develop icons) in my library to assist in my quest. In the meantime, the headshot will suffice.

Thanks for your help in getting this project started.

Re: Looking to make a Lounge icon

Thanks Skitterbug!!! I had taken a look at Lex from the Smilies library and thought it might be too small to start the art work. It is about 2k in size. However, I will try my icon developing tool (Microangelo) to see what might pop out. I do have Irfanview and will certainly give that one a whirl.

Thanks again for your input... much appreciated!!!

Re: Looking to make a Lounge icon

Thanks SMBP!! I had not thought of the icon harvesting programs and that is a good suggestion as a starting point.

I was able to get FavOrg and capture 's headshot. Thanks for the hint about dragging an icon from beside the URL... that will help me develop my own favicon file. Insofar as housing and feeding is concerned, not too sure if I want to take it to that degree. I am obviously stealing him for personal use so I guess I will have to give him some "creature" comforts!!!

"www.wopr.com/favicon" does not seem to exist anymore but the home site did have some pictures that I grabbed.

Thanks again for your hints and suggestions.

Cheers,
Regards,
Bob

Left-click and hold on the IE icon and drag it to the right then release it - you may have to do this two or three times.
If, like me, you trash all history and 'check for new pages on every vist' in your IE setup, you may find this doesn't stick, though....

Leif,

"Left-click and hold on the IE icon and drag it to the right then release it - you may have to do this two or three times."

By George... IT worked!!!

"If, like me, you trash all history and 'check for new pages on every vist' in your IE setup, you may find this doesn't stick, though...."

Alas... but true!!! However, your previous reference to FavOrg saved the day as I now have the icon saved in a separate folder... away from the temp areas.

Thanks again...

Bob

Re: Looking to make a Lounge icon

I know that many in the Lounge can explain a lot of this better than I can, because several people (Leif, Dave A., Jefferson) had to drill basics into my head repeatedly before I could even save a favicon. The Lounge is a little more tricky because I can't remember if Lex was available previously by adding "favicon.ico" to the url. People who understand maintaining a website and how a favicon is set up would know this about the Lounge. Here are a few down and dirty tips I have seen in general with regard to getting favicons from sites.

1) Many sites have a "logo-like" icon available (but not all) if you add favicon.ico to the url after a forward slash.
2) #1 can change over time--not all have them.
3) Some sites won't yield the favicon--i.e. you'll see it and it refuses to drag complete with a no drag sign--a slash surrounded bya circle when you try.
4) Leif was referring to what I call the suspenders effect. Some sites won't give you a favicon by adding "/favicon.ico" onto the url, but you can drag the small "e" off the namebar. Others make you drag it to the right and let it snap back 1-3 times before it will drag as a favicon to the desktop. If you don't snap it back repeatedly then you'll just get the "e" when you hit desktop and not the favicon.
5) I want to make the distinction, if you go for the little "e" to be a favicon, drag from that colored namebar, not below at the url, because even when they look like a favicon, they won't perform like one at the url as a rule--Cnet News at www.news.com is a good example of this. That red "C" in the url just refuses to be a favicon.
6) You have to change the name of favicons just substituting one letter--and some have a naming convention that goes up to 5--other's don't. They have to be kept in a folder. If you don't, they'll be gone when you either a) reboot Clean temporary internet files.
7) You can easily spot and drag a favicon from temporary internet files, but I haven't been able to do this from history at the same site.
8) Currently, I can get exactly what you wanted in half a second by dragging "e" from the name bar of any Lounge page to the desktop and it will morph to Lex in a second.

Ed.SMBP: Currently, the Lounge allows you to simply drag the little "e" to become Lex on the desktop with no prior pulling to the right that Leif described that is absolutely required on many sites or you'll just drag from that namebar and end up with an "e." But on many sites that pulling and snapping back first is necessary to get a favicon--they will often say something like [favicon 1] in a convention up to 5--this one just retains the title bar name while turning into Lex

Ahhh, but we just had about 10cm of clean white stuff and Labrador Retrievers love to roll around in all the glory!!!

Get a !?!?!? Not likely!!! Dogs always wag their tails when you come walking in the front door, regardless of the time of day. Snobby cats wouldn't think of greeting one in such a friendly manner. (Oh, oh...me thinks I might have started something, but that's for another thread).

That shows what you know about cats!! When you come in the door, it's obviously time to feed them, so they line up to welcome you with mouths open and greedy little paws outstretched.

Every afternoon, when I walk in the door, my four year old BITES me on the ankle if I don't immediately give her the usual afternoon handful of kitty treats and a drink of (Cat Sip) kitty milk. That's what I get for starting a daily routine four years ago!
