    Simple Scanner\Copier

I have a Umax 3400 basic scanner (TWAIN compliant ) that comes with a HUGE installation program, that includes a small Copier program. The copier prog is NOT a stand alone and can only be used if you install the entire batch of other photo files. All I want is to be able to scan and print to a printer or a file. I DON'T need all of the other photo stuff since I already have another preferred photo handler. A lot of the material I want copied is newspaper articles and newsprint isn't the best quality in the world to copy.

I have tried a number of the basic copier programs out there, like Ncopy, LC copier & Simple Copier and they just don't "hack It" so far as newsprint is concerned. ( or they are so settings involved that I can't figure out how to properly set then up ) I have been Googling around and thus far have struck out. I could, of course, put the UMax monster back in but would prefer a small freeware or shareware stand alone that can do the job.

There HAS to be something around but I thought I would ask the Loungers for any suggestions or experience with a decent copy program. ( WinXP home SP1 and all the updates. )

I have a great little program called iCarbon that copies to any printer or fax printer driver. It may also print to a file tho I've never tried that. I use my preferred graphic prog to scan direct and save.
I can't remember where I picked it up but the author's site is here .

    Hi Bob:
I have been using Photocopier Pro. for some time. It does all I want and is quite inexpensive.
I used the trial version for a while then decided to purchase Pro.
My wife loves it because it's very friendly and doesn't have many settings. I like it too for that reason.
    try it.
    You'll like it .

    Hi Jack,
    Thanks for the input.
Photocopier Pro is one of the ones that I tried and had mixed results with. ( but better than a lot of them ) I'll keep it as one of the possibilities.

    Hi Peter,

    Thanks for your input also.
Located iCarbon through Google and tried it out. Simple and easy to use but still not giving the quality on a newsprint copy. Don't see the print to file capability, but 1st priority is copy quality. Have you tried to copy a newspaper article with it? If it looks decent, what are your preference settings?

    Re: Simple Scanner\Copier

    Hi Bob

This is a little off subject, but...........

I read somewhere, possibly in the Lounge, that the trick to scanning/copying newspaper articles is to place a black (my memory says it was black) paper behind the newspaper. This prevents the bleed through of the print from the back page and makes it easier for the scanner to recognize the contrast on the side being scanned.

I might have the details wrong, but the concept makes sense to me. You might be able to experiment with it, or perhaps another lounger might be able to provide more info.

    Have a Great day!!!

    Ken,

That's really a great tip. I will try it out soon. It certainly seems to make sense. <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

I think iCarbon probably depends on your printer. I work on 300dpi for B/W and play around with contrast to get a good result. It may occasionally mean wasting a sheet of paper but most of the time it goes 1st time. I get good colour copy at 75 dpi and grey scale at 150dpi.

    Peter,

Thanks for the settings. I'll have to mess around with them & also try Ken's suggestion about a black underliner sheet.

Talking about setting reminds me. Check if there is a setting for "Newspapers/Magazines". I have seen this in the past and, if memory serves, it works well.

Seems to me, I did check for settings similar to that but didn't see any, at least in the progs I've checked so far.
Do you recall where it was?
