can any one say why when I use a style in a table it splits the tables on to the next page?

Have you set any page break options within the style?

Another thing to check is Format/Paragraph & see whether any of the paragraphs in the table are formatted with keep with next, although a page break is more likely from your description.
    Cheers,

What type of style are you applying - Table, Paragraph, Character or List?

Do you know whether any rows are set to wrap text around the table?

Re: Styles and Tables (2002 XP)

I had a list with the default heading styles 1 & 2 applied. I converted this to a table. I changed a heading 2 to a heading 1 and word put an automatic page break in for just that heading 1 style and not the other heading 1s in the document.. This has happened with a couple of other tables as well. I have cheked all pae, table and style properties but can't see why.

I had a similar problem where row A was set as "Heading 1" style to suit the title for columns 2 - 4. Cell A1 was blank and if I changed this to "Normal" style it fixed the problem.

    Just a suggestion
    cheers

The heading styles normally have 'Keep with Next' applied to them. If the string of paragraphs all having this attribute on is broken then perhaps that is causing an odd page break.
