    Broken/Stuck Page Scroll (2000)

Hi All and Happy New Year.

The following is a problem that has started happening just recently on this PC with Word 2000.

When I first open Word by double clicking a xxx.doc file, Word opens fine. I can use the vertical scroll bar by grabbing the slider bar itself or clicking the single arrows to move vertically within the document. I can also click in the vertical scroll area itself to advance the document a screen's worth.

But what I can't do is use the double-arrow buttons to move the document down a page. I also can't click on the "Select Browse Object" button between the double arrows to open it up to select "page" but the double arrows are black indicating it's set to "page". I also don't get the tool tips for these 3 items. I have this issue with numerous files.

Now here's the weird thing. If Word is already open but there's no active document, I can open one of the problem documents and it works fine (with respect to using the double arrows, clicking the Select Browse Object, and getting tool tips). If a problem document is open, I can open a 2nd document and the 2nd document works fine. I can even switch back to the first document and now it works fine too. So the problem seems related to when Word is first open. However, I should add that some problem documents will open along with opening Word and they will work fine some of the time. Further, if I grab the vertical slider in a document that doesn't seem to work (with respect to the double arrows, etc.) and move it up and down "alot" (now there's a scientific term for you), the double arrows seem to unstick (most of the time).

It's not a super big deal. But this seems very odd. Any clues?

    Thanks.

    Fred

Have you tried backing up your normal.dot and thereafter replacing it with another normal.dot and trying again?

    Hi Fred:
This didn't happen to me (& I use Word 2000), but I recall reading something about a security update for IE that causes this. I've literally got to leave immediately or I would search for it. I read it last week I believe on the IE board, although it might have been on the General Office board.

    Hi Cheryl:
Welcome to the Lounge & thanks for the update...although I was looking for the thread that discussed it. I found it <!post=over here,311997>over here<!/post>. I don't recall if they've found a cure for it yet. By the way, see the click tag panel while you're posting a reply & you'll see how you can make a URL live, like http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=824145 .
    Cheers,

    Re: Broken/Stuck Page Scroll (2000)

    Hi JPM (and Phil),

It looks like the normal.dot (dot=disease of templates) has struck again. I changed the name of my normal.dot to something else so Word wouldn't find it and my page scroll buttons seem unstuck. I had tested this on another PC at home and had the same problem (although I think the normal.dot's didn't cross-infect one another) - but that PC is running Office XP. I also forgot to mention that the problem occurred even if the document was based on a template other than normal (which would figure since normal is still available as a global template).

We did not load any security patches for IE on either computer.

Any clues as to why normal.dot is causing this - or do we suspect the "stuck" virus?

    Fred

    Hi Fred:
    Don't know why it corrupted, but normal.dot does that sometimes. At least it's cured. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16> <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Re: Broken/Stuck Page Scroll (2000)

    Hi Phil (and Cheryl),

Thanks for the additional info. I checked the 1st post of the Lounge thread. It didn't seem that the patch had anything to do with Word. Was there some unknown side-effect of that patch that affected Word? I had the same problem on my other PC (see response to JPM) which is running Win 98 SE with Office XP. I don't think the 2 PC's cross-infected one another.

But now I know that I can right click the IE vertical scroll bar and get that menu. Wish Word had that feature.

    Fred
