    phone # format (2002)

    What's the best way to format a phone number?
    Should the base number be entered as text or as a number?
    Here's the format I want: 123-456-7890

    First set the format by editing the US phone format from:

    [<=9999999]###-####;(###) ###-####

    to custom format

    [<=9999999]###-####;###-###-####

    then you can enter them as numbers.

    Unless you want to do arithmetic with the phone numbers, enter them as text. Just entering 123-456-7890 should give you a text value in the cell.

    for some reason, when I enter the number as 1234567890 and format it that way, I still just get 1234567890
    I even tried it after using =TEXT(number,0) to convert it to text???

    You must format the cell(s) first, before entering the phone number, otherwise it won't work. If that isn't practical, Legare's approach is best. (As he points out, there's not likely to be a need to perform mathematical operations on a phone number.)
