    Helper Objects (v6.x)

Where do I set/allow/block helper objects?

Browser Helper Objects are controlled by the detailed Security settings in Control Panel|Internet Options. If you want something that can help you look at these on a one by one bases, there is a setting on Spybot. (If you happen to be already running Spybot, they are shown as BHOs on the Tools sub-menu.) Thanks... I just wasn't really sure, since they call them "helpers" that they were or weren't... SpyBot answers that...

    Chuck--

BHOs are helpers in many circumstances such as extensions of IE like a toolbar, and Spybot labels those legit under tools. They can also be used by spyware for popups and other ad displays and to track you or hijack you using Active X installations as Spybot explains. Spybot labels known legit and illegit BHOs.

So if I run a scan, I'll know which, and SpyBot will remove the "baddies"?

    Re: Helper Objects (v6.x)

Spybot will list them all and classify them as "legit" or a "problem" by putting a red checking bad; green checking legitimate helpers that extend capability. In Spybot on the left pane: Tools>BHOs Listed with IE. Reading the help and hitting those reference lists on the left is neglected by a lot of people, but this app is more than just a spy bouncer, and serves as a worthwhile reference as well. Take advantage at clicking and looking at the lists under "Tools." The process list, for example, is a much better one than Windows Taskmanager's Process tab gives to you; often telling you what you can end safely to bolster CPU. For example, NOPD is speed disk; if you're running another defrag you sure don't need it slurping precious CPU. A Trojan will be ID'd quickly there as well and Windows TM doesn't offer associations.

Here are some Spybot S&D Help/Tutorials.

    Re: Helper Objects (v6.x)

    Hi All

    Just an extra note:

Throughout this, and other threads, Spybot Search & Destroy (or Spybot S&D), is often referred to as just Spybot.
There are several other software titles available on the internet that contain the word Spybot in their titles. Some of these are legit and worthwhile, but some are ripoffs of Spybot S&D and some are malware.

Be very careful if you try anything with "Spybot" in its title other than Spybot Search & Destroy.

    Have a Great day!!!
