    PHOTDRAW 1 WON'T START ANYMORE

I have Photodraw v1 installed on a Win2000 system. It has worked fine for years.
Suddenly it won't load and gives an error message saying:
    "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library,
    Program C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficePhotodraw.exe
    Abnormal Progam Termination"
    I've tried uninstalling and re-installing.
I've tried replacing the dlls that Microsoft says causes the problem.
    No success with anything.
    Any ideas now?
I use Photodraw all the time and it is very annoying that it will no longer function.

Have you installed any Windows Updates recently, or made any other changes around the time that PhotoDraw went kaput? You might want to try a repair install of Windows, to see if that helps.

    good luck,

Re: PHOTDRAW 1 WON'T START ANYMORE

A few weeks ago I applied Windows 2000 update and Photodraw would not work anymore.
So I reversed this update (by bouncing an archived system using Norton Ghost so that
the new Windows update was completely overwritten) and Photodraw worked fine again.
Then a week later I was opening a picture file and it happened.
PD hasn't worked since, despite uninstalling, re-installing, replacing possibly corrupt dlls as recommended by
    a MS KB article etc.
It's really a nuisance to have a program I use so much suddenly stop!
What if Word never worked again - no matter what you did to your computer?
    You'd feel a bit peeved wouln't you?
I thought maybe others might have had a similar thing happen and there is a solution out there.
(apart from re-installing my whole computer from scratch)

Re: PHOTDRAW 1 WON'T START ANYMORE

I just tested what happens on another older computer when you install the latest Windows 2000 updates:
    Photodraw 1 stops functioning.
Now I have reversed the updates Photodraw works again.
It seems that MS doesn't care to retain compatibility.
Would PD version 2 fare better? If so where can you buy it?
I can't find any links to purchase it anywhere that are still current.

Photodraw has been discontinued, so don't expect too much help or sympathy from MS. Sorry. Probably your best bet is to continue to use 2000/Photodraw without the update. There's a link to the Support Center on the page I linked to, so of course you could pursue this with MS.

    good luck,

Thanks but my whole point is that I can't continue to use Photodraw 1
as it refuses to open. (My first post).
Surely I can pick up a copy somewhere that has fallen off the back of a truck
and why would MS mind since they claim they don't care any more?

Re: PHOTDRAW 1 WON'T START ANYMORE

eBay is my source for old or hard to find software, but I don't understand how this is going to help. I suppose it's possible that Version 2 will work with the updated Win2000, but I would think that chances are about equal that it won't. My suggestion is still to do a repair install of Windows. I would do this after uninstalling PhotoDraw. You can do the repair install without losing much, certainly no data, and your programs should still work. Then re-install Photodraw, which hopefully should work again. Then resign yourself to not being able to update Windows from then on.

If that doesn't work, it's time to reformat/reinstall. It seems pretty obvious that something in the latest Windows 2000 update broke Photodraw, and it wouldn't cost you anything but time and some limited aggravation to put things back the way they were before you did the update.

    as usual, good luck,

    kip

PS I just checked on eBay and there are copies of Photodraw 2 for about $130. If I were you I'd buy XP before I'd upgrade to version 2.

PPS I have had Photodraw 1 working on XP, but won't venture any guesses as to whether or not any updates to XP have broken Photodraw since my limited use of it. (Heck, MS routinely breaks stuff with their updates that they DO support!!!!)

    Hi Davehit,
I MAY have a PhotoDraw fix for you. I have just upgraded to Office 2003 and Windows XP and wanted to use PhotoDraw; it wouldn't open. I found this to be the compatability settings on the photodrw.exe file, which is easily put right. See the attached pdf file for instructions - good luck
