    Database needs repair (Access 2000/SP2)

I have just inherited a database to do some changes to and we have a problem when a person tries to get into the database the following error happens:

The database needs to be repaired. Do you want to attempt to repair? Yes/No

This database is on a network and has not been split into a FE/BE scenario, would this make a difference as to why the database can get into a state where it requires a repair?
Is there a later SP release that they should be on, is SP2 the latest release for Access 2000?

SP3 is the latest release. What happens when you say yes to the prompt? If the database is on a network drive, it's possible that different machines are using different service packs of O2k or they may have different Jet service packs. They need to be consistent. And if you have any 2002 applications on those machines, you need to put SP3 on to keep from "toasting" your Access 2000 code projects.

    Thanks Charlotte
If I answer yes to the prompt it then tries to repair the database, but because other people are in the database it does not allow you to, as you would expect. What they do is ask everyone to go out of the database then they can repair it.
I'll check the service packs tomorrow morning.

You said it wasn't split, but I hadn't twigged to the fact that you had multiple simultaneous users. For goodness sake, split that sucker! Front ends are far more likely to corrupt and need repair than back ends. Put a front end on each desktop by preference, but if that isn't allowed, at least make it a separate file on the network.

Would this explain that this happens at least twice a day?

It could if somebody is exiting the application improperly, for instance, if they have a Windows or Access crash while writing to a table.

    Thanks for your help Charlotte.
I have taken the step of putting a FE on each PC. I'll keep my eye on this one, althogh I would expect that it won't happen anymore because they are not sharing a FE anymore.

    Thanks John
I had the condition where there was no FE/BE but just the one database, and it was happening at least twice a day. I have since split the database and we got it once yesterday. Since then we have put a FE on each persons PC so it should be interesting to see what happens now.

It can still happen, but it shouldn't be as common. You might try tracking down the employee who is having crashes and *firing* him ... {evilgrin]
