    add style to existing document

I created styles and tool bar and saved as template. Loaded as global template from "Tools, Templates and Updates". Automatically update document styles box was checked. Opened an existing document which had some but not all of the styles. Toolbar arrived but new styles were not added to the existing document. Is this as it should be. Do I need to use organizer to move these into EACH existing document? New documents also show custom tool bar but none of the styles.

There's an attachment to this post which will explain why your styles, toolbars, etc. aren't coming over the way you expected.

Global templates (other than Normal.dot) don't do anything with styles (with the limited exception of styles that get copied into a document using an AutoText entry). I know that the Word help files say that you can use global templates for this, but they are wrong.

You could put a macro on your toolbar that copies the styles you want using the Organizer. If you do this, make sure to copy them at least three times. If you only copy once the links between styles break down.

See: (<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm>http://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm) for more on templates (user and workgroup), global templates and Normal.dot.
