    Won't shutdown

    To all,
My boss at work came to me with a problem - his PC at home running Windows 98 with 128 meg of memory no longer shuts down. Every time he tries, it just hangs and he has to shut off manually usig the power switch. He has Office 2000 and AOL 9, though these were on his system before the problem started.
Any thoughts on what to try (aside from getting a new system !!)? Thanks in advance.
    Mark

For starters, look here. You didn't say if it's the original Win98 or Win98SE.

Thank you for your quick response. I've already forwarded the information. I hope he has SE and the KB article helps him.

    Re: Won't shutdown

    Hi Mark:
Some additional information, if you want. There's a 508k shutdown patch here for Windows 98 SE from Microsoft.

There's also a useful set of tips available from Jim Eshelman
    http://www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm
    http://www.aumha.org/a/shtdwnse.htm
    http://www.aumha.org/a/shtdwnme.htm
    http://www.aumha.org/kbshtdwn.htm

that you can try. As Microsoft has noted, any suggestion to replace the CONFIGMG.VXD file should be ignored -- replacing .VXD or other key system files manually is only for the brave or reckless.
    Hope this helps,

You might also run a current Ad-Aware. I began having shutdown problems and blue screens some while ago. UPDATED my Ad-Aware definitions, and found I had a nasty little turd called NavExcel. Let Ad-Aware clean it out, and all has been running well since.

I got so infuriated about the shutdown issue, my wife thought I had lost it when I just started beating the keyboard with my fists one day, so I know how it feels! Whether the two issues were related or not, who knows? Might be surprised at what is there if it has never been checked for spyware or adware before.
