My dial-up connection works on my newer computer running XP, but my older computer running Win 98 disconnects, indicating that I should check my password. The number and password is correct. Tried dialing another number through hyperlink and it works. Seems the modem is working as a call was made successfully, the ISP and password is correct because the newer computer works on the same line using the same password and dial-up number.

Two separate computers. Did the problem computer ever work properly? If it did and no longer does, when did it start happening?
I don't understand "Tried dialing another number through hyperlink and it works."
Try re-entering the password when you connect on the Windows 98 system. Just because it works on one machine does not mean that the other is correct. Password files (PWLs) on Windows 98 get corrupted easily.-Mark
