Re: norton antivirus 2003 live update (windows xp home

    RET,

That should not have anything to do with Norton Live Update at all.

I assume you are talking about last weeks problem in trying to download updates. Did you go to IE Options>advanced> and scrolled down to Security and UN- checked the box for "check for publisher certificate revocation"
Also if you are running under Norton Systemworks, go to systemworks options>general and uncheck "disable critical update notification and system-wide automatic live update."

Worse case, you MAY, repeat MAY have reinstall liveupdate because Norton can't "find" it. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

What happens when you run LiveUpdate manually?

I know the password issue seems debatable, but it seems that at times Windows decides to restrict tasks without a password and you are caught in the middle. Try assigning a password to your user account (it's a safe practice anyway) and changing the scheduled tasks so that they have the password also.

So no, it's not new, but neither is it consistent in my experience.

FWIW a Live Update due on 14th January did not run. Running it manually yesterday (the 15th) was successful.

If you're going to run Norton antivirus manually, I suggest you run it from Intelligent Updater using the top .exe Link hitting Open, dragging a shortcut to this page down to your quick start. Then you will get a new definition every day Monday through Friday instead of what Live Update defaults to which is a new definition on when its Wednesday afternoon or evening(very rare weekends) at Symantec Headquaters in Cupertino California. Live Update can be configured so that it updates when you connect to the internet but you'd have to reboot on a broadband connection and I find having to reboot to update definitions really inconvenient so I just use a shortcut from Intelligent Updater and hit it every evening:

What are your settings in the "Live Update options" pane?

It will look something like the attachment, which is from 2004 and I have the auto turned off.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

As you may know, there was a recent problem with Verisign and security certificates - which had a knockon effect on Norton's update program. In the longer term, I would personally expect Norton to have Live Update back up and running on an automated basis. I do appreciate that that is little consolation in the shorter term.
