skip records in source for lookup list (2000)

I am using a field in one of my tables to make a lookup list for a field in a second table. Since I began this database some of the records in the first (source) table have been discontinued. How can I have the lookup list skip some of those records?

Create a query based on the first table that only returns records that have not been discontinued. Use this query as source for the lookup list instead of the table.
