Strange

My buddy has an older compaq laptop and he was doing windows updates and when the computer restarts now it lets you sign in and then makes the sound that windows is starting but then just shows the desktop with no icons and does nothing from there, anyone have ANY clue what can be done to fix this? He has no cd drive on it so i cant just redo the whole computer real easy?

If you can boot to DOS, try deleting all the temp files (TMP + Windowstemp + the Internet temp files, the locations of which completely eludes me ATM). You should also run a defrag but I think you need Windows running for that.

any idea how i can get into dos? its an older compaq armada? i tried F2 and some other keys?

At start up, when the cursor appears to your right of the screen, press F8. This gives you the Start Up Menu. Then select Command Prompt. I think you can also do this with Shift+F5 (maybe Ctrl+F5).

If it has a Floppy drive, insert a boot disk for the system and when it boots to the A: prompt change it to C: and you're in DOS.

My buddy never made a boot disk, can i do that on my computer to work on his?

If you are running Windows 95, 98, 98SE or happen to have an old one around. If not, you can get the necessary files here. I was gonna attach a zip file of the Boot Disk files, but it was over 500kb.

ok i got into windows setup, i will use the book disk if all else fails thank you
