Karen's Replicator

Edited by WyllyWylly to add URL code.

I am in huge trouble. I just downloaded Karen's Replicator and as a test job I had the program backup the My Documents folder to drive D

Are they not in the recycle bin? The only thing I can suggest is Undelete but I have no idea if it will help you now. Don't get your hopes up on recovering everything.

(Edited by Jon_Rick on 16-Jan-04 05:17. )
Thanks for your reply. They're not in the Recycle Bin. And System Restore, using a checkpoint from yesterday, finds nothing to restore -- although I'm missing probably 5 GB of files!

I just e-mailed the Undelete company to ask if their product can retrieve my data. I plan to call Microsoft tech support first thing in the morning. I've also e-mailed Karen, the author of Replicator.

If anybody knows where my data has gone -- isn't it still somewhere on my hard drive? -- or how I can retrieve it -- I will be eternally grateful. BTW, I am using WinXP Home. Thank you so much!

(No, I don't backup these files, since they're huge. Obviously, I need to.)

Re: Karen's Replicator

Ugh! I've not ever heard of Replicator deleting files on its own, but let's deal with that later. First, I hope you're not using the machine to work HERE, or at least nothing is going on with your D: drive or it will be too late for some files. The only undelete program I've used in recent years is Recover4All. Unfortunately, it is not free and the trial version will not undelete large files. So you'll have to pay to see if it will help you. The version for XP costs $69 but it has saved me and a few of my friends on several occasions.

Re: Karen's Replicator

Hi Jon,

First I have to agree with Mark-- it's highly unlikely you'll recover everything.
Secondly, as a precaution measure, try not to use that computer at all until you give up on recovering data. Every single internet page you browse, every file you save, has a chance of overwriting what you had deleted, making it impossible to recover. Moreover, Window's Swap file (chances are very high it's on, though I dunno for sure whether the feature remains in XP) will use more HD on high PC usage, ie, will keep erasing previously deleted data.
Now I'll pass on a link to an app that I haven't used much, but it's free: PC Inspector File Recovery.
If you're at work or within a LAN and have access to a shared directory, try doing this (it's long to tell now but I did this at work a while ago with a VERY similar soft, presumably from the same people, and we succeeded in recovering an 800 Mb PST file):
1) Use another PC to download the soft
2) From that same PC, install it TO A SHARED DIRECTORY YOU HAVE ACCESS FROM THE AFFECTED PC
3) Go to the latter, browse your way to the shared directory, and double click on the EXE file. The program should launch with no problem.
4) All you have to do now is tell it to recover the files.

All this way around the download and install steps minimizes the chances of overwriting previously deleted data. Should the procedure fail, you'll have no choice but to install in the affected PC (note that you can download the soft using another PC, then copy the file to the shared directory, and then use it from the affected PC to install).

Hope this helps.

Jon--

It looks like it will be difficult if not impossible but take a look at Undelete because Execsoft does offer a free trial for so many days of the full version. It has an emergency recovery mode for someone to grab it and try, but although I have it I haven't used it this way before. I figure it's worth a look or a try to see if it can do you any good since they make good products (Diskeeper) and it's free to try a full version:

Undelete Instant File Recovery Tool Free Trial

[i]Ed. by SMBP This can recover files that were deleted before it was installed if they haven't been overwritten so you might have a chance. There is a lot done although it has been with specialized professional tools that can recover material from hard drives. I'm not suggesting you are going to pay for someone to use these, but I'd sure give Undelete's recovery tool a shot and any of the others mentioned. Good luck Jon.[i]

I remember when I first started using computers I could have used Recover4All at least once a day.

No, they bypassed the Recycle Bin. But I bought and downloaded Undelete this morning, and I think it worked! Thanks so much for your timely help; a thousand thank-yous!

Hi,

Thanks so much for your reply. Your tip to stop using this computer, I'm sure, preserved a bunch of files I would have other unwittingly deleted.

What Cowboy's "teasing" SMBP about, Jon, is that you could have combined your four replies into one and saved a tiny bit of bandwidth. See <!rule=7>Rule 7<!/rule>.
