Uninstall Office 2003 and install Office XP (Office 2003 Pro/Office P Pro)

I am about to set up a new computer and will install my copy of Office 2003 on the new machine. I need to take it off the old machine and re-install Office XP on that machine to hand it over to one of my children.
Any recommendations on the best sequence for the procedure?
Many thanks, as always

Two things to consider: Settings Migration and Stepping Back a Version:

There is a Save My Settings Wizard available in Office 2003 that you can use. Just as an extra measure of precaution, you might also like to back up the following folders: [username]Application DataMicrosoft (and all its subfolders) and [username]Local SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook. (In the second case, there are other folders under "Microsoft", but you should not need them.
Stepping Back a Version is basically not possible with Microsoft Office, because the Uninstall process does not fully uninstall. You are really having to look at reinstalling the Operating System - in handing over the machine with Office XP to your child. This has been true with each version of Office. Please feel free to post back regarding the Operating System reinstallation.[/list]HTH

Thanks, unkamunka. Looks as if it will take more thought and time than anticipated!
Will a "repair" install of Windows XP be adequate, or the whole from-the-ground -up OS reinstall?

It will have to be a from-the-ground-up job. A lot of what Office leaves behind relates only to Office itself - rather than adapting the default OS - a historical Microsoft policy which has yet to be revisited.

As you have Windows XP, you may wish to consider the File and Settings Transfer Wizard. My experience with this, however, left me with somewhat mixed feelings. Its time to run - both pre and post-reinstall was significantly longer than the OS installation itself (perhaps because of the size of the My Documents folder). While it appeared to faithfully copy everything, it did mean that a number of things that probably should have been left behind in some great bit-bucket were migrated.

I would recommend that you look at both <post#=325771>post 325771</post#> and the rest of the thread of which it is part for a good discussion of a number of reinstall issues.

Good luck and don't forget to back-up your wpa.dbl file (in the WindowsSystem 32 folder) - which is the record of your product activation!

At least the install time for Windows XP is much shorter than most of its predecessors.

Also note, that since Office 2003 was on the old machine and "Activated" you may have a issue here. Depending in which package you have the activation and EULA may be different.

What pagkage did you have?

As for passing on a computer even to the kids in the house, I would format the hard drive(s) and do a clean installs of the OS and what programs you are going to pass onto the kids. One NEVER knows what may be found in all of the buried subfolders.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Dave, the Office XP on the old PC is an upgrade version (from 2000).
The Office Pro 2003 which had been activated on the old PC and have installed on the new machine is a full non-upgrade version. Interestingly, the product activation ran online on the new PC with no problems noted (I am yet to use it, so have the phone number handy!).
Am yet to do the re-install of XP on my former PC.
Am going to clean up the old machine, as you suggest.
