CD Rom Auto Config (Win XP Home Edition)

Hi everyone: I have only had this new computer for two weeks. I put a cd rom in and the auto config won't work. Does anyone have a fix for this because I can't find it on the Microsoft site.
    Thanks.

Is this with ALL cds or just some of them, if so which ones are giving you the fits?

Also tell us more about your new computer.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

What do you mean by auto config? If it's a matter of making sure "auto play" is turned on, we can tell you how to do that.

    Yes, Al, it's auto play. I've been calling it auto config for years don't know why <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15>

Re: CD Rom Auto Config (Win XP Home Edition)

    Nancy--

See if following suggestions in the first link and KB helps, and there is a fix from MS in the second if the rest of this post doesn't.

How To Adjust CD Rom Auto-Play in Win XP

330135: The AutoRun or AutoPlay Feature Does Not Work
817357: The AutoPlay Function Does Not Work and the Current Media Does Not Appear in My Computer When You Insert a CD or DVD
    __________________________________________________ _______________________

Here's where I check first if I have an auto-play problem in XP:

1)Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services/Shell Hardware Detection/Return this service to Automatic or you can access this inteface with "services.msc" in your run box.
    2) In Win XP Pro you can take advantage of Group Policy Editor: Start/Run/Gpedit.msc/Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System. Check your settings in the right pane for Turn Off AutoPlay (and modify).
    3) Check settings on these registry keys:

    Start/Run/RegeditHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSetServicesC drom. AutoRun = 1

There are other handler keys and values that can be changed, but odds are that checking these might fix this for you. I also include this guide for adding CD Burners to Auto Play from engineer Doug Knox on Kelly's site:
Add Your CD Burning Program to AutoPlay Actions By Doug Knox, MS-MVP
