    USB Hard drive Ejection Problems

    <img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> Loungers

Running Windows 2000 Pro, I have a Toshiba Laptop hard drive in a USB/IDE converter enclosure. I like it a lot, small sizable, 20GB and I can change the drive any time I want to, and best of all, it draws power from the second USB port, so I don't have to carry a power supply for it.

    BUT!!!

Every time I write to the drive, I will have trouble ejecting it later. Even if I completely shut down, and then restart my laptop, I still can't eject the drive using the Unplug or Eject Hardware icon in the Systray.

In Device Manager, the drive has yellow question marks...

Any idea what I should do for that?

    TIA

This may be obvious but, have you updated the drivers for the converter?

Also have you confirmed that the HDD is compatible with it?

Now I have to think of the answers to your questions Hum!!! <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

    1) Have I updated the drivers. Well I am using the Windows 2000 pro built-in drivers. It was working OK, but then started giving me trouble, or maybe I started noticing it giving me trouble when I wrote to the drive. If I browse the drive, it does not give me any trouble.

And I do have the CD that came with the enclosure, but it only has Win 98SE drivers. I will try and use them, or maybe try and check the manufacturer's web site.

    2) Is it compatible with the HDD? Hum!!! <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20> I guess it is, maybe I am wrong and need a <img src=/S/newbrain.gif border=0 alt=newbrain width=21 height=22>, but IDE controllers and laptop IDE drives are supposed to be compatible. Are you saying that maybe the drive is not compatible with a USB-IDE converter?

Thanks for you reply, I will check back with good answers.

Do not try Win98 drivers with Win2k unless the manufacturer specifically says to. Check the manufacturer's site for updated Win2k drivers. Win2k is very pick about dirvers.

I will heed your advice. Nothing has happened yet, and nothing will until tomorrow. Lots of time to check the web site.
