    Displaying referenced posts

I'm probably missing something obvious here, but I "just can't see it". When I click on a link of the <post#=>post </post#> variety, a new window opens showing that specific post with links to other posts in the thread below it. Is there a way (from such a spawned window) to show the thread in "flat" form, either page at a time or "All" view?

    Re: Displaying referenced posts

That link works directly off your lounge preferences, set in the control panel, specifically <IMG SRC=http://www.wopr.com/w3timages/display.gif>.

Also, there is the Flat <--> Threaded toggle image(s) to the upper right corner on the message displays.

    Re: Displaying referenced posts

OK, now I'm even more confused. My preferences are for flat view and collapsed threads, but any post reference I insert is something like:
    http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showthreaded.pl?Number=

Other such links I've seen appear like:
    http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showflat.p...d=wrd&Number=...

I can see the toggle you mention and that does the job. But how can I get that "showflat.pl" to appear in my <post#=>post </post#> links?

    thanks

    Re: Displaying referenced posts

Alan Those links return an error, not that it is important in this case.

Chris From my experience user preference does not affect how the posts are displayed. Mine are set to "flat" but links always open as threaded. I've always assumed that was the way it worked.

    Re: Displaying referenced posts

    Post 1 - <post#=163016>post 163016</post#>
    <!post=Post 2,163016>Post 2<!/post>

Each of the links above go to the same thread in the Words from On High forum. I used the Post 1 and Post 2 buttons directly from 1-Click TagPanel.

Each of these link, if I remember correctly, should display to your preferences, as chosen in the Control Panel. If I'm mistaken, maybe <img src=/S/claude.gif border=0 alt=claude width=21 height=21> could refresh (and correct) my mind.

Should have said they were for demo purposes only - to show the showthreaded.pl? and the showflat.pl? in the link URLs.

    Re: Displaying referenced posts

    Hi Chris

Having done a little digging, I suspect that using the post tag always generates a URL with a showthreaded qualifier. The references I've seen in which the URL uses showflat were probably made by people who found a post, then displayed the thread in flat mode as you described, then copied that URL as a reference. If that makes any sense at all <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>.

That's certainly the technique that I have used when I wanted a link to a flat post.

Chris Both open in "thread" mode.

Alan I think you are most likely right in your explaination.

This have never worried me, as I just click the "flat" mode icon and all is well. Mind you, it would be nice if it did default to the individual preferences. I know if wishes were fishes we'd all live like kings!

Chris, you broke your post with the HTML tags! <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15>

One of our GoldLoungers started a thread on this very topic a while back. As you have seen, things were not able to have been changed then either. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

How's it broke? I don't see a problem from here (or the PC I wrote it on last night).

    Re: Displaying referenced posts

Yes, and the default for posts returned by Lounge Search is also always in threaded mode; both cases ignore your personal settings. I just got used to clicking the parallel horizontal gold bars icon for Flat mode, to the top right of the returned Post. A URL which uses 'showflat' is the only way to get a Flat link. There have been several past Lounge Matters threads on this, I think Chris Greaves was the OP in one such thread.

It doesn't show up for you? It happens because of the HTML comment tags. See the attached...

Hey... fancy! I like my pic on that colour!

    I'll go fix that now <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>. I use Threaded mode, so I don't see the problem <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>.
