Palm Vx won't stay on

My Palm Vx suddenly quit displaying. When I do a soft reset I get the Palm OS logo screen, then nothing. After I do a hard reset I get the logo screen and maybe one other screen (the Preferences screen once, the Digitizer once) for a second, then nothing. I think it's well-charged, so I'm stumped. Any ideas?

I upgraded from a Vx to an M515 a couple of years ago so bear with me if my memory fails. I believe you can place the Vx in its HotSync cradle and power it up. Have you tried this and turned on the power? If the unit stays on then there is something definitely wrong with the batteries.

Thanks for the suggestion. Nothing happens when I press the power button, whether or not it's in the cradle. Here's a question for you or anyone: When I put the thing in its cradle, the cradle light goes on. I'm assuming that means that the cradle power is working, and the Palm is charging. Should I not assume this?

When you place the Palm in the cradle and the light comes on that is an indication that the unit is charging. Do you see an image of a battery giving an indication of the level of charging?

Again, going from memory here... I believe the Vx has a contrast slide control. Have you tried adjusting the slide control? I do remember a former boss complaining that his Palm was cr** because he couldn't see anything. He turned it over to me with a demand that I get him a new one. A little tweaking of the slide control had him crawling out of my office!!! <img src=/S/innocent.gif border=0 alt=innocent width=20 height=20>

I can't display the contrast slider, so I don't think that's the problem. I checked out the palmOne knowledge base (thanks for that link), but nothing there helped. I don't think it's a low battery, partly because I never got a low battery warning, and partly because of the way it's behaving. When I reset I always get the Palm logo screen. After that I sometimes get nothing, but usually get a brief and erratic Digitizer and then nothing. I'm stumped.

For the contrast... press that button on the top, and then use the up / down toggle on the front. Press it (the top button) again just in case you were already in the contrast mode when you first hit the button.

I tried what you suggested, and couldn't get anything to display - I tried various combinations of contrast switch, up/down button, and power button. If I get the logo screen and then just a few seconds of the digitizer or preferences screen, would that mean that the contrast was ok, and the problem was something else?
