    Long path names (XL2K SP1)

    I am trying to lose some of the long pathnames in the linking of files. Example

    You can use the INDIRECT function to refer to a cell whose address is assembled as a string, but this will only work if the references workbook is open.

    Example: cell A1 contains 'C:0data_dDKsStuffVAC2004Storage[2004vacPA4899.xls]Allen, Paul B'. You can now use INDIRECT(A1&"!F11") instead of 'C:0data_dDKsStuffVAC2004Storage[2004vacPA4899.xls]Allen, Paul B'!F11, but only if 2004vacPA4899.xls is open.

    To get around this limitation, download and install Laurent Longre's free Morefunc add-in from Excel add-ins. It contains a custom function INDIRECT.EXT that also works with closed workbooks.
