    Style shortcuts Word 2002 (Word 2002 SP2)

I am confused where I should store keyboard shortcuts for styles. I have a BLANK template with all of my custom created styles and the keyboard shortcuts to them. Don't want to use Normal.dot cause it's too susceptible to corruption. I used this blank template to create all new documents (I have engineered File, New ; Ctrl+N and the new button on the Standard toolbar to open a new document based on this blank template). So all is well when I am working in a document based on this blank template. My problem? When I create a letter, memo, etc. template (I start with the blank document based on my my blank template with my styles & shortcuts). The styles are in my letter template but not the shortcuts. Do I have to move the shortcuts to EVERY template. BTW, I have tried to use Chas Woodman's macro to move the shortcuts but it doesn't seem to work in Word 2002???? Perhaps I am using it incorrectly.

    Hi Pam:
I would store your shortcuts in the attached template. If you will always be creating documents with those styles based on your letter template, then keeping the shortcuts in the attached letter template makes sense. You could also keep them in a global template (one that's in your Word startup folder). However, if your document doesn't contain those styles, then having a shortcut to them isn't going to help. If these are styles that exist in all (or most of) your documents, then you can place the shortcut in a global template.

    I've used Chris Woodman's add-in for Word 2000, but don't have 2002, so I can't help you there.
    Cheers,

Re: Style shortcuts Word 2002 (Word 2002 SP2)

The styles are in all of my templates, but of course I didn't want to recreate the shortcuts in every template (letter, memo etc etc). That's my dilema. I have a global template with toolbars, macros etc., but the styles aren't in it cause they can't be used from there. I suppose I could copy the styles into the global JUST so I can create the shortcuts in the global or 2. create a 2nd global which is a duplicate of the blank template with styles & shortcuts and call it shortcuts.dot. That would have me duplicate all style changes in both blank and the startup templates. Ugh! Wish there was a better way! Wish I knew how to copy shortcuts in 2002 instead of recreate. thanks for your help.

I haven't tried Chris Woodman's Shortcut Organizer, but I see that the page now lists a beta version; perhaps that's for the later versions of Office? FWIW, the page was last updated Nov. 5, 2003.

I did try the Beta version too. Almost feel like it is something wrong on my machine, cause it installs OK but just doesn't do anything when I click on the button???? Drat!

Is your macro security maxed out? If you haven't already, try Medium on the Security Level tab, and check the "Trust all installed add-ins and templates" checkbox on the Trusted Sources tab.

Security was fine, Trust all installed addins and templates was checked, BUT I needed to check "Trust Access to a Visual Basic Project". It now appears to work. Will need to play a little, but atleast it is running. Thank you so much for the push in the right direction.

I still am not totally happy with where I will put shortcuts, but am much better off than when I started.
