    Start page

I use Windows 98 SE, Outlook 2000, DSL Internet connection.

My start page is a customized version of Excite. Suddenly, when I access it, it appears as the standard Excite page. When I sign in, I can access my customized page without problems, but after a period of time, when I attempt to access it again, it turns into the standard page again.

    Re: Start page

I suspect thsi is caused by some malware.
Try running adaware, spybot or a similar tool (see Starred <post#=296439>post 296439</post#> for pointers to some tools.)

    Re: Start page

I have been running AdAware and Spybot all along, for several years. My *customized* Excite page is the one I am losing, it is being replaced by the *plain* Excite page. When I sign in, I retain the *customized* page for about a half a day, then it reverts back to the *plain* page. I do not delete the Excite cookie.

Many thanks for your help, Stuart

    Re: Start page

A friend of mine asked for my help in the beginning of the week with a similar problem. He was unable to access his "customized" personal homepage on Earthlink. He also had the "Use Current" option box greyed out and unavailable on the Internet Options / General Tab. I suggested going to his personal page via the History folder and then copy and paste the address into the "Use Current" box on the General Tab. This apparently didn't work and as far as I know his problem is still unresolved. I will contact him and see if Earthlink was able to provide a solution.

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by StuartR on 24-Jan-04 10:06. )</P>Edited by StuartR to add... This is of course the policy setting for Windows XP, but there is a similar setting for Windows 98 using PolEdit, a quick google search found instructions in the page at http://governmentsecurity.org/articles/Win...estrictions.php - search for HomePage to find the right place on that page.

Another thing to check is whether you have a policy that prevents home page changes.

Start > Run > gpedit.msc and look for this setting.

    Re: Start page

I just heard back from my friend and, unfortunately, he is still wrestling with the problem. I'll keep poking around for something on this issue. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

    Re: Start page

Thanks Stuart and Doc. I think that I discovered the problem, although I am ashamed to admit how I did it.
As I mentioned, I am very diligent in running AdAware and Spy bot. When either programs discover "spies", I delete them forthwith. I started noticing that the next time I try to get to my start page, it is gone.

I remembered the word "logic" and the next time I ran AdAware, there it was "Excite" was now a "spy".

Now I have to decide to tolerate Excite or get another start page.

Again, thanks for your efforts, I appreciate it.

    Re: Start page

This sounds like a situation similar to the thing that started last year with TurboTax. They use a registration verification called CDILLA that the spyware detectives think is malware. Whenever I run Spybot or AdAware, I just un-check the box to remove CDILLA. Can't you do the same thing when the spyware programs find Excite as a bad guy? (after all, they're very helpful, but not perfect)

    Re: Start page

I was just on this thread and the post with the screenshot from Oana Koran might have a setting you can use. If you change the setting for "Check for newer versions of stored pages" to Never that might correct the dropping of your homepage mid-session.

I think you can set Spybot to ignore the Excite cookies when it scans, but I'd have to check. I know Adaware has an ignore function so it would make sense that Spybot does too. But are you certain that it's your homepage cookies that Spybot is picking up ???

Yes, I can ignore Excite when AdAware or Spy Bot runs. Just curious what Excite sends back home.
