Pictures, rules and 'Outlook Today' (WinXP/OXP)

Hi, all. I finally bit the bullet last night and installed Outlook XP (I had specifically excluded it from my office installation originally), and I must admit I was very impressed with the way it picked up and included *everything* from my OE, not just emails but the correct tree structure and even all my Rules - I didn't expect that!

However, I found a few things that niggled me:

First, in OE, pictures displayed at the bottom of the email as well as being available as attachments; Outlook doesn't seem to do this. As far as I can see, if an email arrives with multiple picture attachments I have to actually open each attachment individually to view it. I can't find an option to change this, does anyone know if there is one?

Next, as far as I am aware I have Office XP SP1, but when I went into the help looking for a solution to the above problem, I found a great long list of attachment types that WILL be deleted (not can be, will be), including .bat, which is something I would probably use! I thought the version with the draconian attachment-stripper you couldn't switch off was SP2 of something, not SP1 - am I wrong, because it looks like this version has it!

Third, I get a daily email with cartoons, which are hyperlinked to their source site (as opposed to being attached to the email) - in Outlook these just show as blank boxes with the infamous red cross top left. Again, is there some setting I'm missing that would enable these to display?

Fourth, although all my Rules were imported beautifully, in OE one of the options is to have it run when [this setting] AND [that setting] are true, or when [this setting] OR [that setting] is true; a lot of mine used OR, but they have all imported as AND and I can't seem to find an option to change this either! I do hope it is possible because otherwise I'm going to have make multiple copies of each rule and remove all but one option from each one! Bearing in mind I use Rules extensively (I actually hit the maximum permitted in OE at one point - 200! - although I haven't got nearly that many at the moment) this is going to be rather tedious!

And finally, in happily fiddling about and setting everything to my liking, I got a bit carried away with choosing folders to display on the 'Messages' area in 'Outlook Today' and marked around 35 folders to be included - several more than would fit on the screen. Obviously I immediately saw I would have to prune the list considerably, but the problem is that now the messages list goes off the bottom of the screen, the 'Customise settings' button has been pushed of the bottom too and won't show up even when I scroll down, so I can't get into the Settings to reverse the changes I made! Is there another way to access these settings? Or even just a way to reset the 'Today' screen to its default so I can try again?

Sorry to be asking so many questions, but as many of you know, my only experience with Outlook so far is v98!!

Many thanks in advance for any help!

    Yikes, you scared everyone off. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
    1. <LI>Outlook 2002 does not display attachments inline unless they were embedded in an HTML message. Maybe there is an add-in that will "convert" them to the look you want?

<LI>The SR-1/SP-2 dichotomy was in Outlook 2000. In 2002, at least you can edit the list in the Registry. (I think! A visit to Slipstick's attachment security pages would tell you for sure.)

<LI>Blocking pictures is not normal for Outlook 2002. I'm not sure I could do it if I wanted to! Are you by any chance using Word as your mail editor?

<LI>Someone else will need to help with the Rules stuff.

<LI>That's a fun one! Check this Registry key and see if it lists the folders and, I guess, very carefully delete the ones you don't want and renumber the ones you do.

    Hope this helps.

Hi Jefferson, thanks for that - at least I didn't scare you off! (maybe it's my fancy new title that's doing it to them! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>)

1 - as I said, I'm not terribly up on Outlook - how would I go about finding an add-in for it?

2 - I'll check out Slipstick and see what it/he/she says; not somewhere I've been before (see 1above)

3 - No, I don't use Word as my email editor - as someone said in a recent post elsewhere, this is WOODY's lounge, I wouldn't dare be caught doing that! How would that affect it, just out of curiosity?

    4 - <img src=/S/sigh.gif border=0 alt=sigh width=15 height=15>

5 - At last, something I know how to do already! I'll check it out - but to be quite honest I'm quite happy to just remove the entire list, go back to square one and start again!

    Many thanks

Outlook add-ins are everywhere and nowhere. Slipstick probably lists a bunch. Woody's Office 2003 newsletter had an ad for some today (Sperry Software), but I haven't actually heard of any that do what you want, nor do I know of a really comprehensive index.

If the pictures are received via an extrenal link, would that not be affected by Tools|Options|Security? It definitely is in Outlook 2003.

I think 2003 is the first version that lets you view HTML mail without the pictures. In 2002, you can restrict all active content using the security settings, but not JPG/GIF/PNG, at least as far as I can tell. Doubtless there are add-ons for that.

    Quick update:

2 - Slipstick did indeed provide the method for releasing these attachments; a registry edit.

3 - The pictures reappeared in the cartoons the next day - I don't know what made them go away or come back, though!

What did you do to fix the issue of not showing embedded pictures in OL?

Well, I didn't really - it seems to depend on the way the sender sends them! Most of the time the attachments are just listed and have to be opened individually, sometimes they appear in the text as well - I guess I just gave in and accepted it and I am now so used to it I forgot I had complained about it!
