Network Logon Screen requires 2 tries

I have re-installed 98 (refreshed?) on 2 systems and both now require a log off, then a second log on before the network logon screen is displayed.

I did a search and tried everything that was suggested for similar problems, such as creating a DWORD value named DomainLogonMessage, searching for "autologon" and removing the string, removing and re-installing all network settings, using the system polocy editor to display domain logon confirmation.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Have you gone into the network properties of the control panel and made sure that your not using windows logon and using whatever client your using (In this case I'm assuming Your using the Client for Microsoft networks)

Maybe this will help maybe not...search for *.pwl files and delete any you find.

Re: Network Logon Screen requires 2 tries

I have tried resetting the Client for Microsoft networks back to Client for Windows, then back to networks. In fact, I've tried completely removing the network and re-installing it. All with no resolution of the problem.

I've also tried removing the pwl files - no help.

Thanks to everyone for trying. Any other ideas?

Not sure this will help either, but...

    1. Go to Start/Run & type
    msconfig
& then press <enter>. Go to the startup tab & see if anything is loading that causes this. You can try disabling everything except Explorer & see if it still happens. If not, then adding them back in one at a time until you find something.
    2. Go to Start/Run & type
    sysedit
<enter> See if there's anything loading in the AutoExec.bat file.

Frankly, I would have thought that rebooting after changing to Client for Microsoft Networks would have worked. Have a look at the Properties for your internet connection in Dial up Networking, too.

The only other thing I can think of is grab Tweak UI and use it to change the auto login. I know you can change it in the registry direct I'm just not 100% sure where it is right now. It's been too long since I worked with a windows 98 machine.

I already tried TweakUI with no success.

I haven't yet tried msconfig, but I'll do that and report back.

    Thanks again for everybody's advice.
