Merging PST Files (Outlook 2000 SR-3)

I had to reformat my hard disk, and reinstall Windows XP. I had saved my PST file before the format, but after reinstalling Outlook, I was rather slow in restoring the PST file, and about 12 messages came in before I thought about restoring the main PST file. If I restore it to the normal place, it will overwrite the 12 messages. Whle this is not the end of the world, I would like to keep four or five of the messages. Is there any way that I can merge the two files? The Microsoft help files are, as usual, fairly helpless.

I ran Search because I was sure there was a previous answer to this question, but nothing exactly like this showed.

    I'd approach it like this:

    - close Outlook
    - rename your "new" PST (and maybe make a backup copy)
    - place the "old" PST where the new one is, and rename the "old" one what the "new" one was named
    - reopen Outlook; it should open with the "old" PST intact
    - select File | Open | Personal Folder file, browse to and open the "new" renamed file
    - drage all the messages from the "new" to the "old"
    - close the "new" PST file
    - delete the old file and backup if all went well

Look into "Importing" the old pst files into the new one.
You will find this under "File, Import/Export"

Many thanks to DaveA and John BF for their replies to my posting. Because I always find drag and drop a little chancy (failing eyes and hands!) I decided to go for the IFile, Import/Export route outlined by DaveA. Ir worked like a dream, and all my emails are together again.

I suppose that this is another example of it paying to browse the menus in a program, rather than the Help files. I was thinking of 'merge', whereas you have to look under 'import'. I normally consult Barry Simon's book "Maximising Outlook 2000", but in this case the index didn't help.

    Regards, Howard

When I teach a computer class, one of the things I push the most is, on any new program or version go and walk through the menus. It can be a real eye opener as to what is there and what has been added or moved in the current version.
