Reinstall woes (XP Pro)

My hard drive died (all backed up so just a hassle - no lost info). I installed a new one today and then reinstalled Windows XP Pro. Everything seemed to go smoothly. I registered it and started installing all my drivers etc. First I needed to play to reward me for all my aggravation a bit so I decided to go on the net. So I go to my external hard drive, where I had stored my favorites and go to move them to favorites on the new hard drive. Much to my surprise, Windows installed itself on the E drive not the C drive. Is there anything I can do save fdisk this drive and reinstall? And if there is, how can I prevent it from happening again? Does anyone know if there is there anything that I might have inadvertently done to cause this to happen?

Kathie,
Assuming there is no other "C" drive shown in Windows Explorer, try this:

Click on Control Panel>Administrative tools>Computer Management>StorageDisk Management.
Highlight the "E" drive, drop down the Action tab>all tasks, click on change drive letter & paths.
A window will come up and you can add C, in the box where it says "allow, etc,
click on change & then OK.
The E drive should now be the C drive.

Somehow my internal zip drive was designated as the C drive. Can I use your idea and change the zip drive to G (there is currently no assigned G drive) and then do as you said? Then maybe I can assign the zip to E as it was before.

Kathie,

I don't see why you can't do just that. Clear out the C drive slot and make it what ever drive letter you want. Then move your new boot drive to the C. Just have to do little juggling of drive letters.

I finally got the nerve to try and do this and it just told me that windows can not modify the drive letter of the system volume or the boot volume. I guess that means an f-disk then, huh?
