Hiding File Contents in Explorer Window (Word 2002 SP2)

    Holding the mouse over a .doc file name in Windows Explorer reveals the first few words of the file even if it has been password protected. Is there any way to prevent this information from showing?

    This information is picked up from the title field of File>Properties (Summary tab) which is automatically generated when you first save the document.

    You can change the contents of the title field to stop this being displayed. If you are happy using vba then the following macro will clear out the contents of the Title field

Sub ClearTitle()
    ActiveDocument.BuiltInDocumentProperties("Title") = ""
    End Sub

    Just to add one addition to Tony's answer. If you want to make sure that you always remember to create new documents without a Title, go to Tools/Options/Save tab & check the box "Prompt for document properties". This will bring up a dialog box when the document is first saved & you can delete everything in the Title box (& Author box, too, if you wish).

    I suppose that you could also change the name of the macro that Tony supplied to AutoClose, place it in the attached template, & that would delete the Title property whenever the document was closed.
    Cheers,

    Or, if that's too much work, just start all your documents with a pointed question, like, "Why are you reading this?" (After the first save, you can delete it from the body of the document; it will stay in the properties.)
