Image Doesn't Open In Default Program (Win XP PRO SR-1)

Can anyone tell me why all image files are opening in Picture and Fax Viewer? Example: The default program to open a GIF file is Microsoft Photo Editor, yet when you click on a GIF, Picture and Fax Viewer Opens. This is the same for JPG and JPEG. With BMPs the default viewer was the Fax Viewer but I changed it to Paint and it now opens properly. Any ideas

You've (re)set the default actions as outlined in

Yes I have. But the thing is, the file type already thinks it will open with PhotoEditor so there really isn't anything to change/reset. When I follow the steps nothing changes - meaning the Gif file still opens with Fax Viewer. If I just change the associated program [using Change rather than the steps outlined in the KB], the file will open with the new program but the icon displayed for each file is still the Fax Viewer.

This may be a bit simplistic, but........

Have you tried right-clicking on the image file in question and selecting "Open With" then from the dropdown menu select "Choose Program" and then in the resulting window select or browse to the program you want to open that type of file and select it and then check the box "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file"

Re: Image Doesn't Open In Default Program (Win XP

Thank you!

I logged on to the lounge this afternoon because I was having trouble with my image file/program associations for different profiles. When I made Mozilla my default browser, it made itself also the default program for opening gifs and jpgs. I had no problem fixing that association back to Photoshop in my profile, but Mozilla had also made itself the default browser AND image viewer for ALL the profiles on the computer - and when I went into the folder options in the control panel for OTHER profiles, changing the associations was greyed out and was not an option! But following your tip here I have fixed the problems on profiles for the other household members. Thanks again,

Doc,
I did that and it works fine. The icon for all Gifs still look like the Fax Reader but I guess I can deal with that.

Thanks.

I should have mentioned that little quirk. If you want to change the icon, you have to change the file association to the program you want it to associate with. Like Photoshop, Irfanview or Paint Shop Pro. To do that go to My Computer or Windows Explorer and click the Tools menu and then click Folder Options. Click the File Types tab and in the list of file types click the one you want to change. The settings for that file type are shown in the File Type Details box. Click Change and then specify which program you want to use to open files that have this extension. Accomplishes the same thing. It's just the long way around the barn.
