Good morning. When was the last time you ran disk cleanup and defrag? May help, may not.

Have you real-time virus scanning enabled?
Try clearing the temporary files IE creates (Tools | Options) - it may clear some of your cookies, though.
Run Scandisk/Chkdsk and do a full surface scan.

Rats!!!

A search for previous posts with this issue produced no joy. Using Win98 (2nd ed) v. 5.0 (2919.6307co - whatever that means!) Disabled screen saver, background wallpaper and all scheduled events save NAV update set to run middle of night each Tuesday night. Lately I've been getting lots of "This program has performed an illegal operation..." messages (not a new msg but more frequent of late) and often have to restart in order to get to my destination.
Is this an Iexplore issue or Windows 98? M/be problem stems from another source? (MS office I know a bit about but Windows/Iexplore info might fit on the head of a pin!) Anyone have similar issues with this 'illegal operation message in Iexpore? Often have to reboot 2+ times per session in order to check mail or go to Woody's, etc.
I've been told my pc is getting a little 'long in the tooth' (like its operator ). I bought this misbegotten clone in mid-1997 & have been told parts of the pc were from 1995-6 and it's been suggested I dump this OS in the and 'get with the new stuff'. because: I have at least 1.38 gigs free space left on C: more on E & D drives; am not running programs that require mega space/mem; just my e-mail (3 accounts), some on-line stuff like looking at news headlines etc so I don't think this is necessary but would welcome comments/suggestions.
TIA,

Re: Rats! - Illegal Operation Again

Two days ago ran de-frag & try to remember to do so on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. I delete my tmp files fairly regularly (thanks to a response to a post by Phil Rabichow a month or so? ago). But what does 'real-time virus scan' mean??

Re: Rats! - Illegal Operation Again

Some virus software is running all the time checking for new or changing files - as soon as it detects activity it grabs it to scan it.

Still might be worth doing a scandisk to check for possible corruption.

Re: Rats! - Illegal Operation Again

I have Norton AV Auto Protect enabled. Would that do it?
It took 4 reboots to get IE to open. When I did get in I downloaded and installed IE5.5 Service Pack 1 & Internet Tools just in case it might help. Well it didn't. I have been trying to answer posts for the last 1 1/2 hrs. I ran scandisk - no errors. Ran sfc, will do defrag shortly after deleting all ~.tmp files. Now if I can get this posted before dying again ...

Re: Illegal Operation: Can I delete these files?

I just did a search for temp files and found 52! plus a lot of folders named, for example, "Pro3336h.tmp" and some folders related to NAV. The folders are located at "C:Program FilesCommon FilesSymantec SharedVirus Defs". I've never noticed these folders before. 3 of these folders are dated 1998, several from March and April of this year. Is it ok to delete them?

Re: Rats! - Illegal Operation Again

Auto Protect could be doing it - there must be a way to turn it off and see if it is the cause.
However, turning it off would seem to defeat its purpose .
If it is the cause, perhaps there is a setting to get it to ignore the IE temp folder? - but I'm getting out of my depth here.
See if disabling Auto Protect helps, then we can take it from there.

Re: Illegal Operation Again

Hi Karen, I ran de-frag (after downloading 5.5 which I'm told is a bit of a dog - and an accident waiting to happen! oh, well)). Anyway whether de-frag did it or downloading 5.5 - I only 'froze' once today and did not have to reboot once!
