Can anyone identify C:\SXS directory? (SP2)

I've noticed in the C: drive of my XP Pro PC a directory with the following files:

    <pre>Directory of C:sxs

    30/11/2003 19:45 <DIR> .
    30/11/2003 19:45 <DIR> ..
    07/02/2002 15:13 9,675 msxml4.cat
    04/02/2002 02:52 1,230,336 msxml4.dll
    06/02/2002 17:01 3,489 msxml4.Manifest
    07/02/2002 15:13 9,679 msxml4r.cat
    04/02/2002 02:43 82,432 msxml4r.dll
    06/02/2002 17:01 500 msxml4r.Manifest
    6 File(s) 1,336,111 bytes</pre>

Can anyone identify them and why they might be there? Inspection of the contents of the files only seems to say something about XML and Verisign; can't find anything on a quick Google, or on TechNet! The filenames can obviously be split up as "MS" "XML" "4", but I'm surprised that they didn't get put into C:Program Files...

    Thanks!

    John,

The only location I could find with SXS file types, were in the C:WindowsWInSXS folder.
They appeared to be similar to the ones you mentioned, but with many more than the few that you posted. They seem to be MS, C++ or Visual C++ files. For what purpose? Haven't the foggiest.

Yes, I see I've got those as well - they look very complicated...

    John,

Actually, I don't think they do anything. <img src=/S/nope.gif border=0 alt=nope width=15 height=15> Reminds me of seeing some engineering drawings with some items marked with an asterisk and "pnuf". This mystified me until I found out that pnuf meant, performs no useful function

The draftsmen had to insert something to baffle the engineers. Like an Easter Egg in todays' programs. <img src=/S/clever.gif border=0 alt=clever width=15 height=15>

The fourth item on a Google search of WinSXS came up with this site:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default....ng_sequence.asp

    Hope this helps

    Zeno

Thanks for finding the reference - you will have noticed that the directory name I referred to originally was C:SXS.

However, on a first reading I cannot make head or tail of it, so will have to sit down with a printout of it and a wet towel round my head. It doesn't seem to answer the question of WHY the directory it is in my C: drive (undoubtedly I installed something which caused it to appear).

    John,
I found these bits of information here. Not knowing more about your system or situation I figured if it was pertinent you could dig through the links. HTH

SXS installation (SXS= SecureWave Application Server)
By default, a log file is produced
    Name: setupsxs.log
    Location: %TMP% directory

    Logging at SXS operating level
    Start Regedit, open the key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicess xsParameters

    Wowee, Doc!

This doesn't look like anything I know about.

I suspect I will have to trawl through all my directories to find out what got installed at about the same time. That may make a bit more sense!

    Thanks again!

Re: Can anyone identify C:\SXS directory? (SP2)

One thing to note is that the sxs in your example is lower case and the SXS in the one I pointed out is all upper case. FWIW.

The information was turned up on a Google search for "C:sxs"

Re: Can anyone identify C:\SXS directory? (SP2)

Hmmm. NT isn't like Unix, and treats all versions of the case of directories and files as identical... e.g. C:SXS, C:sxs, C:.SxS, C:sXs, and so on!

As I said, when I get home I'll hunt other directory dates...

If you right-click the DLL files, the properties should tell you the vendor's name. Just says VeriSign??

    <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15> Didn't think of that!

But an examination of directory timestamps seems to indicate that the installation is contemporaneous with that for Logitech software (for my wretched sound-free webcam...). Heaven knows why it needs this SXS stuff!
