    Downloading IE 6 OE (WinME)

I managed to remove IE from my system some weeks back. I also removed OE. I've been using Mozilla since then. Some of my friends are having problems and asking me to walk them thru fixes (yeah, right?), and I can't because these products are not installed on my system. I've tried searching for them on my ME cd without success.

IIRC, IE came with ME and OE came with IE/OE. SInce I'm a licensed user, I ought to be able to recover from this without reformatting my C: drive and reinstalling everything. Am I on the right track? Can I download IE6.0 and install it? I seem to remember doing this to replace IE5.5. Will that also get me OE? I realize that I will have to apply SP's.

All suggestions greatly appreciated and gratefully received.

OE is part and parcel of an IE install. So reinstalling IE should bring OE back for you. Please post back if it doesn't.

Re: Downloading IE 6 OE (WinME)

Didn't work. I still had the IE6 setup download file. I ran it and opted for a normal (not custom) install (not an update). It ran find with the progress bar running up to 70% where it remained for 2 and half hours. I assumed at that point that there was a problem and cancelled the install.

There's a funny thing going on though. When I added a new screen name in AIM, IE loaded as a result of clicking a link from an AIM panel. Does this mean that IE is actually installed and I just lack a means of launching it.? It doesn't appear from Start/Programs nor do I see it in Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs nor do I have a shortcut icon on my desktop. Is there something I should look for the registry?

    Thanks

    Bob,

Go to this site and it will explain how to download IE6 SP1 complete and save it to disk or CD. It will take a while to DL it if you only have a dial up line but DSL or cable should not take TOO long. Then you can run the install direct without doing it on line.

Re: Downloading IE 6 OE (WinME)

    Howdy viking,

Went there; did that; started a new install (typical); 3 hours later it was still at 70% as before so I shut it down. Guess I'll just wait til the next c format and complete reinstall (or the next pc purchase, whichever comes first).

    Thanks for the help.

Take a look at this MKBA page: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;281967 . Your problem seems to be addressed in the following: "When you try to install an Internet Explorer 5.5 service pack or Internet Explorer 6, your computer may stop responding when Setup is 70 percent complete . . . ."

Re: Downloading IE 6 OE (WinME)

That DID IT! I guess my skills at searching the MS online help need improving. I had about 40,000 0kb oem*.inf files. Took over 2 hours to delete 'em all. After that, the complete IE6 that I downloaded on advice from viking installed in just a few minutes. I now have IE 6 running but more importantly I got OE back so that I can access all my old Outlook contacts and archives.

THANKS GUYS! REALLY APPRECIATE THE HELP!
