    Tasks on Today (OutlookXP/WinXP)

I am just beginning to learn what is possible in Outlook, having only recently started using it properly, but I have a little quibble with its handling of tasks and I'd like to know if it is just the way it does it or if I'm missing something somewhere.

I keep Outlook looking at Outlook Today by default. If I set myself a task, it appears on the task list. Fair enough. But what I would *like* to happen is that if I set a start date and a due date on task, it shouldn't appear on my task list until the start date. As it is, as soon as the task is created it's on the list and I have to keep checking the due dates on the list to see if something is coming up to needing doing.

This is liveable-with for one-off tasks, but I have a number of recurring ones that happen every Monday, every four weeks, every three months, etc and I would like to put them on the list - but it's just not practical when as soon as I 'complete' one task, the next one appears even if it's not for months yet!

Is there a way round this? I do hope someone knows one!

    Many thanks

To the right of the date is a link to customize "Outlook Today" You are permitted to change the tasks that appear to be either TODAY's task or ALL tasks. You should also have the chance to include tasks with no particular due date

Yes, thanks, Eowyn, I know about that, and in fact my current workaround is to put the real start date in as the due date, put the real due date in the description and have it all set to show only today's tasks. That way it appears in the list on the real start date, although it turns red for overdue almost immediately!

Well, we're upgrading to 2003 at the office soon, so maybe that will have a slightly more flexible approach (although I'm not holding my breath!).

    Exhale...

    Outlook Today in 2003 still won't do what you want. <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

Frankly, I think that Outlook Today is a very weak interface. Here, we have personal calendars and a shared calendar. I'd like to display both calendars under the calendar part of Outlook. But when I add the shared calendar to my files, it shows up as a file under Inbox.

With just a little tweaking, Outlook Today could be a dynamite interface to the various pieces, but the limited ability of the user to make it look the way they want keeps many folks from using it at all.

Oh, well, thanks for letting me know, Bob - at least I won't be kept in suspense until our August upgrade now!

Heartily agree, not to mention <!mskb=820575>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 820575<!/mskb>.

A while back I was pointed to Digital Dashboard Outlook Active Desktop but I have never had time to try it. You and Beryl may be interested in 'DigiDash ActiveDesk', but I have no idea IF you can get what you want, nor how much effort you will have to put into it to get what you want.

FWIW there's an in depth <!post=Lounge post,137981>Lounge post<!/post> on Digidash. I haven't had a chance to fully verify that all the links are the same - as the site owner had some problems about 12 months ago (which now seem to have been cured). HTH
