Message Freeze upon reply (OutlookXP/sp2)

OS Win2k/sp4
When a new message comes in, I open, read and click on reply. The message freezes up. I can close the message, re-open and click reply with no problems. Reboot is no help. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Try running the Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe) in something like: C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemMSMAPI1033.

I should have also mentioned that you could try running Detect and Repair under Help in the Main Menu.

Does this problem happen with every incoming mail? Do you have a fully cleared out Inbox? If not try archiving all messages into a separate folder - set up just for testing - and see whether the problem continues.

Ran detect and repair. Inbox was is emptied upon replying to messages. There is never more than 3 -5 messages at one time.

Are the freezing messages HTML format? Or do they contain attachments? Are you on Exchange server? Do you have any 3rd party add-ins loaded?

Rich text, Exchange Server, No addins or third party. No attachments. Had blank emails with blank subjects to no avail.

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by JohnBF on 28-Jan-04 17:46. )</P>I don't have any brilliant ideas. Perhaps another Lounger does. At this point if it were me I'd be looking at the following, but this is just me:

1. ensure that there isn't a ton of recoverable deleted items per my post <!post=here,324767>here<!/post>, which probably won't help, but might if you are running out of server-side file space allocation. Except instead of recovering any such items, permanently delete what you don't want (in my case usually everything).

2. close Outlook and all Outlook windows and then, using the path appropriate for your version and OS, run this in the Start | Run box:
c:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice 10OUTLOOK.EXE /cleanviews /resetfolders /cleanfinders

3. I always hate to tell people to reinstall, and so wait to see if another Lounger has some good ideas. After making a backup of your PST, uninstall Outlook, run RegSeeker or something similar to clean out related registry entries, then reinstall.

How big is your "PST" file?

You may not have much in your "Inbox" but ALL of the other folders, contacts and etc are in this single file.

It's working fine for now. Not sure what happened. It's MS, who knows what happened. Thanks for all your help and suggestions.

If it is an exchange account ONLY, no PST, I'd first talk to your Server Admin to see if there is anything they can do. I only know the client side, not the server side, so I don't know what they may be able to do. And sometimes this kind of weirdness can be caused by a single corrupt message record. It's happened to me twice in about 5 years.

(Also, rather than creating a new post, you can use the Lounge 'Edit Post' function to add more text to your post.)
