Labels not set to manual feed (Word 2002 SP2)

We recently moved from Windows 98 to Win XP and from Office 2000 to XP. Since this conversion, the printer tray for labels (Tools->Letters and Mailings->Envelopes and Labels->Labels->Options) is no longer manual feed; it is now defaulting to the automatically select. Automatically select then chooses tray 3. This happens no matter which of the firm printers you are connected to (we have HP 4000, 4100, 5si, and 8150 printers). I checked on my home install of Office XP and Word should set this to manual feed as it did in our previous versions of Word. Has anyone seen this or have any idea what might be happening?

I don't think that users can change these defaults.
Do you have Administrator privileges on the server/domain that the printer is connected to?

Yes, I either have or can get full rights to any part of the servers and workstations. What do you suggest??

Now I've moved your post here to the Windows XP forum, I realise that I'm not absolutely sure that this is a printer setup problem <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15>

The good news is that my system runs Windows XP and Office XP and I see Manual feed as the default in that dialog box, so it can definitely be done. How are the paper trays currently configured on your printers?

Are you using the "generic drivers" for these printers from the XP CD, or did you install the drivers from HP for Windows XP?

A lot of people assume that the drivers on the Windows CD are the full functional drivers from the OEM, but they are NOT.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

We are using the generic drivers. I found out something interesting as well. If I change the driver from a HP LaserJet 4000 PCL 6 to the prehistoric HP LaserJet 4 or even the 4MP/4MP PS, then Word works as expected. However, if we change to this driver, I would suspect that other programs and files would be adversley affected.

Oh, and one more thing to add. If I attempt to install a driver I downloaded from HP, I cannot install it (even as a local admin). The driver appears to be unsigned and will not install.

You can install the HP drivers. Start Control Panel, double click on System, click on the Hardware Tab, then click on Driver Signing. The current setting is probably "Block". Simply click on "Warn" and then when you install the HP drivers, you will be notified that they are unsigned but you will be given the option to proceed or cancel.
