BCM 2003 Install overwrites Windows XP Files? (2003)

I've just installed Office 2003 Pro and am trying to install Business Contacts Manager. BCM installation finishes, but I get a Windows XP error message telling me that "Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability Windows must restore the original version of these files. Insert your Windows Professional CD ROM now."

So, dilemma: Overwrite the files BCM has apparently in its wisdom installed and presumably requires or take the risk that the Windows XP error message is wrong and just cancel out of it and hope for the best?

    Any thoughts?

Do you have the latest WinXP patches installed? BCM may be installing newer versions of key files in the WinXP OS.

Thanks for the quick response! WinXP and Office 2003 were fully updated before I tried to install BCM.

Re: BCM 2003 Install overwrites Windows XP Files?

My instinct is that WinXP has updated versions of the files BCM is trying to install. These newer versions should be backward compatible. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16> Thus, the advice would be to let WinXP overwrite the BCM files. Let us know if you have problems with running BCM.

Re: BCM 2003 Install overwrites Windows XP Files?

Hmm. I'd have thought BCM 2003 was the later product. Could Win XP SP-1 be later than BCM? It's not a question of Win XP updates subsequent to SP-1, of course, since these wouldn't appear on the Win XP CD that I'm requested to provide. What's weird is that I haven't seen anyone else having the problem in this forum and MS has nothing about it on its site.

It's the patches that will have made the difference - which is why I originally put the question the other way around. FWIW the "press" I have seen on BCM has lacked enthusiasm. The Outlook integration is, I understand, its major plus.

Well, I ended up _not_ going back to the Windows XP disk. Have I hammered myself? Nothing bad seems to be happening other than that I am getting a compile error in Excel. That seems likely to be unrelated, but who knows?

I would also think that the compile error in Excel - provided it is a VBA issue - is unrelated. The WinXP issue is merely whether you are now open to various security issues which previously were patched. HTH

Well, I reran Windows update and it didn't indicate that any updates needed installing. Not that that necessarily means anything. What to do now? Thanks, by the way, for your interest and help. Hopefully, I'll be able to correct any damage that may have been done.

FWIW, the problem was ScanSoft's TextBridge Pro 9.0. It doesn't seem to play well w/Office 2003. I unistalled TBP and reinstalled it. TBP's Instant Access function crashed. They have a fix but it seems to be working okay now even without that. Just what I needed. An unrelated problem cropping up at the same time!

Whoops. To be totally clear, TBP triggered the compile problem. The jury is still out on what's causing the unidentified Windows files problem.

Re: BCM 2003 Install overwrites Windows XP Files?

FWIW I've had no problem with TextBridge 11 and Office 2003, but then I've only been using it with Word.

On the Windows XP files, unless you do a Repair Install (which won't affect your installed programs - other than possibly BCM) Windows Update won't be able to tell you've overwritten patched files. This is because it will refer to your Registry for installed patches. While BCM will have overwritten the patched files, it won't have affected the LIST of patches already installed. To get the patched files back, you would have to do a Repair Install off the WinXP CD. You would then have to reinstall patches, and, depending on your CD, SP1.

Re: BCM 2003 Install overwrites Windows XP Files?

Well, I did do a repair reinstall. Things seem to be okay, though something didn't get installed (fleeting error message along the lines of "Not certified to work with Windows XP so it won't be installed"). And I did have to reinstall all patches. Still things seem to be working fine. As they seemed to be before the reinstall. Fingers crossed and thanks much for the help.

Glad to hear everything worked out!

You should be able to install the uninstalled item. Go to either to the Device Manager in Administrative Tools|Computer Management, right click on the item (which should have a yellow exclamation mark) and choose Reinstall Driver - or to the Add Hardware Wizard in Control Panel. Instead of choosing automatically installation of drivers, choose manual selection, point it to the drivers and click your way through the objections.

Re: BCM 2003 Install overwrites Windows XP Files?

Just tried this. WXP tells me it can't find the driver and I should specifiy a location. (Tried both ways: Device Manager and Install New Hardware.) This I can't do, since I have no idea which device this is! Driver tab gives no clue: No driver installed. Interesting problem in an annoying kind of way! Any thoughts? TIA
