    Cannot Reinstall (97)

I am trying to reinstall Office 97 on a Windows 95 machine to correct crashing problems with Excel. The drive has 4 GB freel When I tell the Setup program to reinstall Office, it correctly reports the 4 GB but tells me that is not enough space. Since it's overwriting existing files, the necessary net space should be 0 but I cannot imagine even a full install taking 4 GB. Any suggestions?

If you do not care about all your customizations in your old installation, you could try uninstalling the old copy (which will free up the space) and then re-install. If space is very limited, you could temporarily zip other directories/folder then expand them afterwards.

Is everything on one drive? The install program is measuring both the drive where the Program Files are and the drive where your Windows folder is. HTH

Everything is on one drive. I've done this before successfully on the same machine with about the same amount of free space so something strange is going on, I just cannot figure out what.

Your free space may not be continuous enough to be able to have the files copied to the hard drive BEFORE the install really starts. If you were to read the system requirements there is disk space requirement to run the install and then a requirement for the files of office.

Are you saying he could benefit from a running Disk Defragmenter?

Yes and do a temp and TIF file clean up first. He MAY just gain enough space to do the install.

Right now, I have 4GB free and Office takes up 100 MB. I cannot be sure that if I delete Office that 4.1 GB free will be enough for it to decide to install.

    Re: Cannot Reinstall (97)

I have 4 GB free. Since Office only takes 100 MB on my system and a CD only holds 680 MB, I should have more than enough space for anything Office wants to do. I did defrag the hard drive but that had no impact what so ever.

That is "680 MB" compressed, the space is needed to "uncompress" this and then do the actual install.

    Re: Cannot Reinstall (97)

My last box only had a 4.3 G drive, and space was not a problem for '97 pro, so you can rule out that line of thought.
Have to start looking for something else. How about trying an Excel uninstall, reboot then re-install only Excel. As I recall, you can do the uninstall from the CD.

Just a small point, but there is a difference between the size of the drive, available free space and contiguous free space.

    Figured Out

For some reason, Office was reading my current installation but wanting to reinstall itself onto the installation CD rather than the C-drive. Of course, there was no space available. I used the drop down box to force it back to the C-drive and clicked on Install Anyway (forgot the exact wording of button) and it went smoothly. Strange behavior but I glad I got it working.
