Javascript links won't open (IE 6 SP 1)

    Hi,

I go to my school's WebCT site to read various discussions posted by students. When I hover over one, I see that it is javascript, but when I click on it, I hear the distinct "click" but nothing happens. I also went to a site to see last year's Super Bowl commercials, and the same thing happens. I hover over one of the links, and I see something along the lines of "javascript(playmovie..." at the bottom. Again the click, and nothing happens. I've got IE 6, with Service Pack 1 and all the updates since. It's a Windows 2000 SP-4 OS.

Oddly, if a boot to my old Windows 98 SE partition, I can see those things, even though I have IE 6 SP 1 on that. I can also see these things at work, which is once again a Windows 2000 SP-4 OS.

And I have gone through Tools, Internet Options and enabled the various Java permissions in both the Security tab and the Advanced tab (although in some places it's referred to as Microsoft VM).

I'd like to be able to use my Windows 2000 boot at home. Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks!

    John

Sometimes the software that suppresses pop-up ads can't tell good JavaScript windows from bad ones. If you are using an ad-blocker, can you tell it to trust those sites?

    Hi,

Unfortunately, while I have both Spybot and Ad-Aware, I don't use them for (and I don't think they can) preventing pop-up ads. I do get other pop up ads at different web sites. So I still can't figure out what's wrong.

As <!profile=jscher2000>jscher2000<!/profile> suggests, in some cases, you may feel comfortable with adding the site to your Trusted Sites (Control Panel|Internet Options|Security). How much can this reduce your problem?

A number of antivirus software packages, software firewalls, and toolbars like the Google Toolbar feature popup blocking software and this will cause the problem Jefferson mentioned. Sometimes it helps to hold down the shift key while the page is trying to load. Many of these popup features have a place where you can click to allow popups on a particular site. You might want to check and see if you have something like this.

Can you post a URL for a page that has one of these links, or are they password protected?

Thanks for the suggestions - still no luck. Holding down the shift key while clicking on one causes a window to open with the standard IE boilerplate that this page can't be found. That even happens after I added the website to my trusted sites category.

My academic site is password protected, but I can certainly give you the link to the other page, which is just a collection of 2003 Super Bowl ads and movie trailers:

    http://www.ifilm.com/?sctn=collections&pg=superbowl2003

I tried the 200K settings to see some of the videos - no luck.

    Thanks again,

    John

The link did work for me, after I finished clicking all the cookie dialogs. The iFilm site uses a LOT of ActiveX controls. I can't tell whether these are needed to watch the movies or are delivering rich media ads, or what. However, the bottom line is that the page code is very complex and I don't think I can really do much to work through why the links don't open for you. Maybe you'll find a simpler example! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
