Roman and non roman numbers in Heading styles (Word 2000)

    Hi gang,
This is probably an easy one but I just can't think today.
I want to have a Headings 1, 2 and 3 to go like this:
    I. Intro
    1.1 xxx
    1.1.1 yyy
    II.
    2.1 xxx
    2.1.1 yyy

I can't figure out how to set the first digit on heading 2 to a number instead of a roman numeral. Maybe this is not possible. Any trick you are willing to pass on?

    Tks

    Hi Ms. JC:
This is NOT an easy one (as far as I know). I can't see a way to do this with automatic heading numbers because once you set the display of a particular level, the next level picks up that numbering (including the display style).

Therefore, the only way I can see to do this is using {SEQ} fields. You'll can modify the technique used by <!profile=Howard Kaikow>Howard Kaikow<!/profile> at http://www.standards.com/. Look for Numbering of clauses using SEQ fields in an Annex.

There was a very similar technique that someone developed, which included AutoText entries & a macro to update the fields, but I can't seem to find it.
    Regards,

I was able to format how you wanted it. By having Heading 1 be a I., for levels 2 and 3 I checked the Legal Style Numbering box.

    Very nice <img src=/S/thumbup.gif border=0 alt=thumbup width=15 height=15> I didn't know what that check box did.

    Stuart,

I didn't know what it did either! I figured if it didn't do anything correctly I'd just uncheck it.

Nice one, Leanne. I knew what that box did & I could have sworn I tried that, but I think I didn't play around with the previous levels enough. Well done!
