XP Popups (Pro)

I have a new system and hadn't used XP before this. I have 3 different spyware/popup programs running and I still am getting these ridiculous popups even when IE is not open.

I read about deactivating/stopping the messenger and have done that but still get the popups. I also removed the Windows messenger according to Woody's XP Tips. What else can I do to stop these popups??? I have a cable connection.

The first thing to do is to give us a detailed description of one of the pop-ups. Maybe you can even use Alt-Printscreen to grab a copy and attach it to a post.

Just got 4 of them at the same time. But it is bigger than 100K and cannot be attached. I only saved one of them. Tell me how to make the file smaller so I can show it here.

To make the file smaller you would need to use some graphics editing software, have a look at <post#=270762>post 270762</post#> for some suggestions. Otherwise can you type the text from the pop-up so we can try to discover what it is.

Also can you explain what spyware/popup programs you have and how you are using them.

    Re: XP Popups (Pro)

Here's what I have... Popup Manager, Spybot, and Spyware Blaster. I have used AdSubtract in the past but have not installed it on the new computer yet. I thought Popup Manager would work just as well.

Obviously, the popups are coming through IE. As I said, I have a cable connection so I am always connected. But this never happened with my Windows 98 dinosaur so I am assuming it is some "feature" of XP. I also checked and the Messenger service is still deactivated and stopped.

    Thanks for any help!

I am bemused. That is not coming via the Messenger service, but is a standard Internet Explorer pop-up. I don't use a pop-up blocker, so maybe one of the other loungers will have some suggestions for you, but whilst we are waiting for bright ideas... Do these pop-ups appear when you access a particular site or sites? Or when the PC is not in use? Or just when you are "browsing around"?

    Re: XP Popups (Pro)

Have you checked the settings in Popup Manager to add popups to your block list? Or updated Popup Manager to the latest? My guess is that rather than some problem with XP, the nature of popups are that they are getting "better" at getting through. I am using some (ahem) new software that does a good job blocking popups, so I'm not using Popup Manager anymore and I don't have it here to play with the settings. Popups are quite annoying, though. I sympathize. Check your settings and see if you can't get more of the ######s.

The only popup blocker that I am using is the one that comes with the Google bar. Seems to work well.

    Re: XP Popups (Pro)

Well, as normally happens, I turned on my computer this morning and there were 5 popups that just "appeared" without opening one single program or doing anything. It just booted up and they were there. They seem to be the same ones each morning.

I also get a System 32 window that opens along with these popups each boot-up.

And to answer your question, the popups appear whether or not IE is open and have nothing to do with a particular site. I can be playing a game with no IE open or other windows and they appear.

Would the new IE Update that I just received have anything to do with it?

One other funny thing...if you notice on that screenshot there is a green bar at the botoom left of the window. That is PopUp Manager saying it is doing its job and hasn't blocked any popups! When it blocks a popup, that bar turns red.

In the posted image I can that you have 4 IE sessions open, did you checked to see what site each was open at? This could give you a clue, that one of the sites has been set as Trusted by all of your different programs.

Also see that your Oulook Express is opened in the Junk folder, which could be sending you to these sites. What AV program are you running?

    Re: XP Popups (Pro)

Yes, at that time I had many windows open...how clever of you to notice! But that was because I was trying to get the screenshot to work and had a few "Woody" windows open about how to do the screenshot plus this page and a Google search. My settings are medium, I have no trusted sites (believe me I don't trust anybody!), and do not accept any of those "publisher certificates" as accepted sites. If a site doesn't load, oh well! No Active X are allowed to install and I am "immunized" against all the malicious sites/downloads/installs.

As for Av...don't yell at me! I tried one once and had so many problems, my system crashed and I had to boot in Safe Mode to remove every setting from my registry. Of course, that was under Windows 98. Since then, I have not used any AV except AVG free version which I update if that matters. In all my years, (knock wood!) I have never gotten a virus and do not open attachments, check the web addresses of links before opening, etc. Call me lucky, call me savvy, call me stupid...I just think they are too hard to work with and cause more problems than they solve.

My OE is set up the exact same way as I had it on my old computer. That's what bothers me...all my settings and usage is the same as on the 98 computer (cable, settings) yet I never had this problem. I don't get much spam (I am leery of giving out my e-mail) and get very few unintended e-mails. If it is an e-mail that I didn't request, it goes right into the deleted folder without opening.

I have read something about blocking an open port...would that have any effect? If so, would that also work against me?

    Thanks for your help, Dave!

I am still no wiser about the cause of your pop up problems. Since this is not a common problem there must be something else going on, but it's not clear what. Maybe you have been infected by some sort of trojan - have you run Spybot and AdAware?

    > I also get a System 32 window that opens along with these popups each boot-up.

This one is fairly common, see for example the replies to Post 291627

    Re: XP Popups (Pro)

Problem with adding this popups to my blocked list is the popups don't stay up for very long. Once I move my cursor over the popup, it disappears. If I don't bother them, they'll stay up forever, but once I try and get info it disappears. I did manage to get the url of one but cannot add it to Popup Manager since I did not access the program through the popup. That's another strange thing...the Popup Manager green/red bar at the bottom left of the window isn't there on these popups meaning that Popup Manager did not intercept them or even know they were there.
