    Removing programs from my startup

I have Win98 running. In my msconfig settings, in the startup tab, I have a program set to run but there is no name and no description. I thought it was very suspicious so I removed the checkbox so that it does not get started and I have had no problems. I ran an recent version virus checker and it found nothing.

I would like to permanently remove it from my computer so it doesn't show up in my msconfig. Is there a way to find out what program it is? I have a C:WindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup folder but there are twice as many programs in msconfig than there is in this folder. I do not hide system files in my explorer so that can

Try doing a file search on the whole of C:. Also, if you post the name, one of the Loungers may know what it is.

Re: Removing programs from my startup

I had a couple of those "blank" enrties on my startup tab in msconfig on my old Win 98 system. I also unchecked them with no apparent negative consequences. Never discovered what they represented, but always felt that they were the remnants of something that I uninstalled and it just left behind a little souvenir or a program or part of one that I disabled from it's default to start when Windows started (FindFast and Office Startup come to mind) and it was just "saving it's place in line" if you will.

Also, there are some things in msconfig that are started from the registry and they won't show up in Windows Explorer. HTH

Re: Removing programs from my startup

I did a search on all the startup folders under the C drive and that didn't find anything. It's weird that MSconfig hides names in the first place. It looks like I will have to live with it. Thanks to all for the remarks.

Do a search on your complete system. These nasties will not need to be in a "Startup" folder. Any program can get things started by using a "ini" file or an entry in the registry.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

If you want to remove items from msconfig, see <post#=310675>post 310675</post#> for instructions. If you see a name of an item that you want to look up, see <post#=310873>post 310873</post#>.
    Hope this helps,
