Master Documents - has ANY version nailed it yet? (Word 97+)

Hello. I've been searching around ( search!) and since my company still only lets me play with Word '97 and at home I have no use for Master Documents, I'm wondering if ANY version has gotten it right yet. The quote I love (but forget where it came from) is "It's not a matter of IF Master Documents screws up, it's WHEN." Is this quote still true for versions later than Word '97?
Thanks in advance.

Hi KT:
The quote is from John McGhie: "A master document has only two possible states: Corrupt, or just about to
be corrupt" and his article is Why Master Docs Corrupt. I can't say whether it's ever been "nailed", but you'll find a positive explanation of how & when to use them in a doc file that you can download here.

I haven't used it though.

Phil,

Thanks, it's nice to know I'm not the only person who thinks a master document can be used if you are careful. Sometimes it is the only tool do a job.

Thanks guys... Stuart, I had seen that post of yours and when I was forced to use master docs (way back when) I followed more or less the same route (until I finally convinced my boss that it was horribly flakey) Phil, great explanation, I'll keep that in my pocket for the next time any of my bosses gets a bright idea.
Thanks to you both!
