Files/Printer sharing on firewalled LAN XP Home

I've just set up a network between my PC and my wife's: ADSL connection that goes through a Netgear RP 614 router to both computers. For the moment, both computers are firewalled using XP's firewall (I know this isn't the forum's favorite firewall -- open to suggestions here on what might be better and relatively cheap). The obvious problem but one I'm too thick to get around: this works great for each computer's access to the ADSL connection but blocks connection between the two computers on the network (file sharing and, more importantly, printer sharing). How do I allow the firewall to allow access between the computers on the network but protect them from outside threats?
Many thanks in advance for any help and apologies for the naivety of this question but I just can't figure this out.

I use ZoneAlarm and it is as cheap as one can get, <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>
You can get it at http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/cata...lid=home_zainfo

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

If you are new to firewalls definitely get Zone Alarm's free one. I use it on a couple of machines, I also use the paid version and several other freebees on many systems.
Re: the MS firewall support, where you turn it on or off there is a "settings" button, it is vague and does not give a lot of choices but may allow your sharing.
As an industry professional I would just suggest dropping the MS firewall though.

Re: Files/Printer sharing on firewalled LAN XP Home

Thanks Kent. I downloaded Zone Alarm on both computers and it's very easy to hook up the file and printer sharing between them while still running the firewall on the ADSL connection. I'd had Tiny's firewall on both PC's before upgrading to XP and installing the ADSL and network, so punching a hole through the firewall to the two computers was something new to me. Thanks again for the advice.

    Tony
