Viewing messages in OWA and OE (XP/2002)

I'm posting this here in the Outlook forum, rather than Outlook Express, since I understand Outlook less!

Situation:
our ISP has Exchange Mail Servers, and our email messages can be "accessed" (I'll explain what I mean by this later!)

either using Outlook Express, by downloading them to the PC in the usual manner into the InBox, answering them so the messages appear in SentMail and deleting messages so they appear (at least until OE is closed) in DeletedMail

or using Outlook Web Access from a web browser, wherein only the InBox appears to have messages in it; these messages can be answered, or new messages sent, but the SentBox rarely contains the messages. Similarly for Deleted messages (performed within OWA).

The length of time messages stay on the server (not at all, or kept for however many days), and thus can be viewed using OWA, is controlled by a setting within Outlook Express (you all know where it is!).

As you can probably gather, I'm a bit confused about what should, or shouldn't, be in the various folders/boxes.

Specifically I would like to know

a) is there any way where messages sent from OE on the PC can be viewed using OWA in the mail server's SentMail?

if you send a message using OWA, is there any way that it can later be viewed either on the server's SentMail box, or (somehow) downloaded back to the SentMail box of OE on the PC? (The only way seems to be to put "yourself" as one of the recipients when you send mail using OWA.)

I've looked within the OWA documentation on the Microsoft website with no enlightenment.

Am I understanding matters correctly, or could some OWA brain assist?

Thanks!

John, if I understand your questions a. and b. correctly, the OWA client user needs to hit the 'parent folder' icon (see attachment) to get to the root of their' Server storage, and from there navigate to the Sent Box (or other folders), whence they can view Sent messages (or other items). Does this help?

Are the "*.dbx" files being stored locally or on the ISP server?

If locally, it should be self explained, one does NOT have access to the local drive by the way of the internet and do NOT think you would want this.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

John

The OWA client shows icons for all the usual folders one beneath the other, ordered alphabetically:

Contacts
Deleted Items
Drafts
Inbox
Outbox
Sent Items

As it stands at present ONLY the Inbox contains any messages.

The *.DBX files live on the PC, BUT the following options have been set in Outlook Express => Tools => Accounts => Mail tab => Properties => Advanced => Delivery
Tick in front of Leave a copy on the server
Tick in front of Remove from server after [12] days
Tick in front of Remove from server when deleted from "Deleted Items"

To rephrase DaveA's explananation, "if it ain't in the Server, it ain't gonna show in OWA". However, this doesn't seem to be consistent with the "Leave on Server for 12 days" setting. Since I use OL and OWA, but not OE, I'm out of my depth; Dave may know, or it might be more of a Server Forum question.

Re: Viewing messages in OWA and OE (XP/2002)

As an aside, I still have a subscription to a UK ISP as a backup - pipex. It enables both local and webmail. Sent webmail can be viewed on the web and, as it suits, downloaded onto one's PC. I don't know how prices compare, but then there is always the old saying: "you get what you pay for". BTW the UK dial up service was always very reliable and high quality for overseas sites. They also now offer broadband. HTH

Mail sent from a POP3 client stores Sent Items locally, period.

If you want to have Sent Items on the server, see if your ISP supports an IMAP connection.
